Um, I had to sound pedantic here, but your title and your subject matter do not coincide. One transvestite does not constitute a plurality. An American in Paris is not the same as Americans in Paris. If nothing else, the music in the former is better than anything the latter could come up with.
Akaky, if you come to Burn looking correct all deviations from strict and proper English, then you will have a full time job and you will go insane.
“then you will have a full time job and you will go insane.”
Been there, done that.
I’m not trying to correct every deviation from the Queen’s English on the Net, a Sisyphean task I have no desire to undertake, it’s just that one guy in a dress doesn’t make a crowd of guys in dresses, not in Rio, not in Scotland, not anywhere.
For example, I meant to say that I hate to sound pedantic here, not I had to sound pedantic here, both of which are true in this context, I guess.
AKAKY,
And how do you know that the two figures on the left side of the photo are not biological females dressed up as men?
I don’t, Sidney, but it doesn’t really matter; tranvestism is men dressing as women, except in Scotland, whereas women dressed as men are simply being stylish.
Akaky, this is the most serious I can ever remember “seeing” you here. (I used the quotes because I am actually not seeing you at all and I don’t want anyone to get confused by my misuse of the Queen’s English, which I never use anyway, and wouldn’t know how if I tried.
And not only that, but they could still the two walking into the picture could still be guys who early that day dressed up as women, in which case they would, indeed, be transvestites who later donned men’s clothing and beard stubble over their female garb.
AKAKY…FROSTFROG
well my mom was an English teacher and being her son did not spare me her wrath when i spoke or wrote incorrectly….which i of course did, and do, on a regular basis….sorry mom….
i think what Peter was doing here was writing what he thought of as a title rather than a caption….as a caption it should read “a transvestite stands on a corner”….however as a generic “title” the plural transvestites would work, yes? A book titled Transvestites, could in fact have this picture of a lone transvestite on the cover, correct?
by the way, the two guys (apparently) on the left appear to me to want to get to the other end of the block just as fast as they can…yet yes, things are not always as they appear…
cheers, david
