Pohutukawa with Rangitoto | photo by @alistairkeddieAs mentioned before, most of the pohutukawa trees are going out of season but a few are still in bloom. So thought I’d post today showing off their vibrant reds. I found this one growing yesterday along the sea front at St Helier’s Bay, another of the city beaches.Out on the horizon sits Rangitoto, an iconic Auckland landmark and extinct shield volcano that last erupted some 600 years ago forming the island. According to Wiki, the name translates to ‘Bloody Sky’ and is remembered in local Maori legend. The island today is a reserve and home to the largest pohutukawa forest in the world.
