the drive from new york to charlottesville, virginia is about 7 hours…..but it is like going from one planet to another…..we went from gridlock traffic in the morning to a peaceful campfire in the woods by evening..i will be “reporting” all this week from michael “nick” nichols “”Festival of the Photograph” which has transformed charlottesville from a quiet university town to a major venue for serious photography..
this week sally mann, eugene richards and william albert allard are the featured exhibitors…..alex webb and rebecca norris webb, maggie steber, and i are doing portfolio revues and a 2 day mini-workshop…evening slide shows with the work of paolo pellegrin, jonas bendikson, alexandra boulat, larry towell , donna ferrato, debbie flemming caffery, and many others will grace the screen of a 3,000 seat arena….in a nutshell, nick has brought the whole photo world to this sleepy virginia town that thomas jefferson made famous by choosing charlottesville as his home before and after he was the architect of independence for the u.s.a…
i will have more material for our community here than i will know what to do with….nick has pulled off an amazing event here in virginia and i will try to present happenings here in the most helpful way for those of you who are just too far away to attend…..
nick is a “country boy”….but he has created one of the most sophisticated photography events to be now and forever respectecd on an international level…never underestimate what is at the end of a country road….
If you find the time take a look at the Lightstalkers projection…I’m curious what you think of it.
Happy Birthday a day late.
David… Have a fun!
Carsten… i think you have pictures on this projection, right?
I sent my photos to Andy Levin, but didn’t get any reply… so my pics are not there for sure … but i am also curious how Lightstalkers projection will look.
Cheers! Aga :-)
A 3,000 seat arena? Wow… Here i see a 150 heads “crowd” listening to the debates of PhotoEspaña and i think it’s a good sign that people look interested on our way of living. But at this scale? That’s something i’m not used to, not at all.
Hi Aga,
my best guess is your email to Andy was lost somewhere…he did a great job and put a lot of work into this.
I was just wondering what David’s opinion of the whole thing is. He’s very much into collaboration, as we can see in the other thread…the LS projection is a collaborative effort, although a bit large (there are quite a few photogs involved).
David,
We meet over lunch at the Geographic in 2001; I was with Chris Johns, back when he was working on his Peace Parks story.
I now work in a research lab finishing up my disseration. As a student, I spend a lot of time on the web procrastinating. I came across your “journal” about a month ago. Very cool idea.
I am blowing off work for the rest of the week and going Nick’s festival. If I see you, I will introduce myself. Either way, it should be a good time.
Thanks again for providing another avenue for procrastination.
Ry
i was in charlottesville last weekend and the galleries were open.. and nick’s pictures are hanging in the trees! it’s ON. the place will be buzzing this weekend for sure.. everything looks great.. i saw nick and introduced myself and he gave me a big hug.. he doesn’t know who i am but i guess that’s how he is.. i’m a ‘hugger’ too so of course i gave him a big hug back.. anyway, i’ll be back there tomorrow so i look foward to seeing all who can be there! and the others will be there in spirit i’m sure..
Carsten… yes, bad luck ;-) or my pics was not good enought :-)
Lance “Hugger”.. have a good time! :-) (it’s sound you already are spending time very good :-))
hey dave- wish I was there. sounds like fun. cheers from texas. avs
Sounds like a sweet time. Can’t make it though. Truly wish I could. Happy belated birthday by the way. The community of photographers sound like such a beautiful thing. Wish I could witness.
Best to you.

i’m so in favor of these events that are out of the ‘usual’ big centers… all the best for nick and everyone else at the show! including you David :)
there’s another example of a photography festival really off road in terms of location.

David- bill emory here, I was snapping at you this afternoon in Bill’s gallery. If you have time, walk east on Water Street to the C&O gallery, 515 E water, down past where sally’s stuff is. B&W prints, mostly silver gelatin, made this past march.

David left us… haha.. it means festival is really interesting :-)
David, I hope you dont remember me! I was the person who freaked out in your class in Santa fe in 2000!I was working on a project in grenada, West Indies and came to the workshop completely stuck. You gave me the kick I needed to carry on and now I have started a book. Thank you for showing me the way!
I would love to touch base with you. I am frequently in NYC although live in Boston.
I had hoped to be at the festival and might make your event in NYC

Fantastic Festival!!!
David, it was *So* great to finally meet you, I can truly tell how much you love life and the people who love you and your work. Your son is a great guy, I had fun getting to know him and see him do his thing as well.
Your workshop was awesome, no fluff, no hand outs, just pure & honest photography, thank you!! For the last 10 years, I felt like I have been stuck in a shell that has prevented me from engaging in true authorship. While I have loved my career and what it has allowed me to do and see, I need to see something deeper than that and you confirmed it…I needed that big time.
I would love to work in a more in depth environment with you if the opportunity arises, but I will see you next year at the very least. I have a brilliant journey ahead and I can’t thank you enough.
Peace,
Dan
