now , this feels strange…

why??

i just cannot tell you…for one thing i felt more than  a little bit of sentiment as i closed down “road trips” and our old blog platform…i mean, we all hung out there for almost two years and she served us well…we all made new friends , got a lot of work done and, well moving out of an old house and into a new one always leaves one with mixed feelings…

however, i feel we will easily continue our community  here…the most obvious thing  is that you will now have a real venue…a place to be published….and with many more watching than you may realize…it will take us some time before we will have a significant amount of content of yours up, but that really is just a matter of  YOU getting us material we request…

there is a new e-mail for you under “submissions”…this will be used primarily for you to submit for our ever changing “selected photographs”…..

instructions will come soonest for  how “work in progress” will be applied…basically, i will take on up to 5 photographers as a special mentored group….just as i have mentored online  with Patricia, Panos, and Rafal …..we will use PhotoShelter as a place to “hang” , edit your stories etc…

“photographic essays” will be the place for final finished stories, text, videos etc etc..this will be THE  place to aspire as well as will “selected photographs” which may change daily in the very near future…your .”photographic essays” will be on the “front page” for probably one week each and will always be easily accessible…these essays will also evolve….for example, “Sugar” could end up with a video component at some future point as could Patricia’s “Falling Into Place” and so on…

the nature of our forum has always been like a darkroom print in the developing tray…we have always watched the print develop so to speak…our new Burn will be no exception….

if you do not see your name on the “photographic essays” to come list, do not despair….i know there are several others coming…some are just more ready than others….you know who you are, so get your material together please!!!!

yup , Anton has his story up first….damn right…the boy deserves to be up first (please DO NOT MISS THE RED BUTTON right hand corner for full screen viewing and turn your speakers up)…for one thing, he and i have been working nonstop for days and days…..there is no time of day  or night when Anton has not been available for my questions and has not been willing to work and to tweak things out…plus, i  just love starting with “Sugar” …..Birgit is a light burning bright….inspiration for us all….

  1. MAAAAAATE! It looks Fantastic and runs as smooth as silk , Well done Anton!
If you need anything from me let me know,This is going to be a very interesting trip.

  2. Oh my god, is mine THE FIRST comment here on BURN??? I better write quickly before someone else beats me to it ;=)

David, your dream-come-true is a wonder to behold. As I said to Anton, it is all about “edgy elegance.” I know you and Anton have been at it nonstop for days and days and days, not to mention the weeks & months before that! And there are SO MANY others who have made this happen. Believe me, all your hard work has paid off in a fabulous new home for us Road Trippers. May we use this new forum in a responsible, playful, intense, intelligent, passionate, respectful, artistic, authentic way. May we learn and grow and become more and more the best that we can be as photographers and as people. It is a new beginning. And we have our very own DAH, the most generous-spirited man we know, to thank!

    much love & gratitude
    Patricia

  3. dead tired… something turned into reality once again in our community… isn’t that the best, turning things ‘real’?

going to bed now, but “with one eye open”… touching wood…

sleep well, my friends… i’m glad you like our new place… i do too :-)

    cheers,
    anton

  4. I love it! The screenshot dummies on Road Trips got me excited, but this really is a thing to behold. Beautiful design, great photography, and a real community. Couldn’t ask for more… Well, I’d ask for a couple of things to smooth out the design: Could “burn” at the top be a link to the front page? I had to search a little to find the “home” link… Could there be a more prominent link to the rss feeds? The almost invisible link at the bottom of the page is hard to find; it’s a lot easier for me to keep up with updates when they come into my feed reader and I know it’s the same for other people… But, what, that’s just two minuscule nitpicks that don’t even really matter. The whole thing is great beyond words.

  5. Well, long life to BURN… Great to see the magazine for real after the long hours talking about it… and it is starting in the best possible way, with Anton’s very moving essay. Congrats Anton and David for making this a reality!

    Eric

  6. Oh my.. it’s like that TV show where they renovate your house while you’re gone.. this place is rockin’!!! wait wait.. where’d they put the pipe??? i’ve got some pictures for the walls when you’re ready!

    lance

  7. Carlos Martínez

It’s amazing what a group of creative and talented people can make. Congratulations to all the people who put their effort to create this magazine…
    Viva BURN carajo!!!

  8. My favourite photo-bar-hangout has got a renovation and I must say it looks GREAT! Congrats David and all who made this platform come together. I think it’s going to evolve into to something very very special. Can’t wait to see ALL the images and work to come.

  9. All,

What a wonderfull Christmas present! I’m burning to see Burn evolve. Congrats to all that have been personally involved in the development of this platform! Hard work = Good job!

Merry Chritmas to you all, and that 2009 Burn us all!

DAH, once again touché my friend!

    Sofia Quintas

  10. Heck with taking shoes off at the door….this “party” is going to rock much more than the old place ever did, and that “house party” was no slouch…

Mr. Harvey, Anton, everyone at the kibbutz meeting (both IRL and virtually) who dug in and made this happen – very much deserved props to you all.

  11. Beautiful! I’ve been here since the start of the original blog so it’s a thrill to see this new format come to life. BURN is all that I imagined it could be…and more. Great job everyone.

  12. David….

Looking real good! I sent you an email.

    Anton…

Damn fine job on the site. Haven’t had time to look at sugar and give it the attention it deserves… But I will soon.

  13. David, Anton and all the back room crew who’ve helped put this together and make it happen,

    WELL DONE!!!

site looks GREAT, easy to navigate, intuitive…

Even as a relative outsider, maybe a second cousin to the family here it’s exciting to
witness. What I find most inspiring is David’s ability to turn a negative into a positive
(no darkroom pun intended). Not so long ago things got a bit messy and out of that…
Well this is the result. So if that ain’t a massive lesson for us all…

    Thanks and here’s looking forward

    Sam
p.s new photos of my own about ready to share with you all

  14. Noice, very noice indeed…

Best of Season’s Greetings to y’all at BURN…

Can’t wait to see what flames it starts in 2009!

    Congrats DAVID, ANTON & ALL!

  15. My congratulations David, Anton and all the persons who participated!

I am very honored to see my name in the list… and next to STEVE MCCURRY! It is very real!!

I love Burn, dark and elegant, and easy in if to find…

  16. DAVID, ANTON and ALL the people who made the dream become reality,

Congrats for the efforts and the results already achieved. I feel very happy and honored to simply share comments here with you and hope to be always part of this amazing community!

BTW, I had the amazing opportunity to meet one special member of this family last week.
I was working in Korea and met the lovely Kyunghee Lee in Busan. Along with a traditional korean dinner we talked about photography (of course!) and I had the privilege of receiving a signed copy of her book!
My sincere and best regards to this incredible, very kind person and talented artist.
This is one of many reasons to be glad of being here, even if it’s just as a lurker most of the time.

And my sincere wishes of a blessed christmas and a wonderful 2009 to you all!

    Cheers,
    Ari B.

  17. Neat David… VERY neat. Congrats… Now we are two at Magnum selfpublishing on the web (in case you’re not aware yet: http://cambodia.ka-set.info/ is what I’ve been working on for the last ten months). Very rewarding indeed.

Just one thing about the photographers in the pipeline: James Nachtwey and Steve Mc Curry emerging photographers?

  18. hey all…

thank you so much for all the great comments… really flattering… and a nice thing to wake up to here in europe :)))

it was such a great experience to work closely with everyone, have everyone contribute to the discussion, and to actually physically fly over to david’s place in NYC to “walk the walk”……. we had talked the talk for some time now, and the time had come to show that we mean business… and find a way to showcase great work in a hopefully equally great way… maximize opportunities to show work in the best possible way… we’re constantly evolving along this road, burning, and so will this place…

over the next few weeks we’ll be ironing out all the little things that need to be tweaked still, and adding some more nifty little things… make our life here easier still, and showcase our work better still…

so thank you thank you thank you all for your help & insights… we could’ve never done it without you… no kidding

the engines are fired up now…. let’s BURN some motherf***in rubber…

  19. Congratulations everyone – BURN is on fire!!!

    -DAVID and the kibbutz team
I am delighted to see a site this good. And this is just the beginning.

  20. i take the site as a bday present whether you want it or not :))))). I had nothing to be proud of: i was born with stalin and saakashvili. both lunatics ( ok, ok – samuel l. jackson is still in the list of pretending lunatics and negotiatiors with force – and stays along with … burn )

You have BURNED the connections to the ground.
    love
    haik

  21. The ship is ready and sailing free across the sea with a wide new horizon in front of our eyes. “Burn” really looks great, wow!! A place to share, a place to learn, a place to BE, a place to BURN.

Thanks to all that made this happen (David, Anton, and so many others) and thanks to everybody as now it is our responsability to keep it alive. We’ll do it!!

With the sweat of our brow and the courage in our hearts, Gentlemen, Hoist the Colors!

    Thanks!

  22. JOHN VINK…

you have been a publisher all along…when i met you for the first time in France back in 1994, you were publishing your little magazine …i am well aware of your Cambodia site and definitely think we should work together..i am also very anxious to do a story on you, so i will contact you by email to see what we can do…

as for James and Steve as “emerging photographers”, i sure hope so..aren’t we all?? in my workshops i always have as a final show my student’s work as the grand finale and an iconic photographer as the “warm up band”…as a matter of fact, Jim was the first who so kindly gave his time to my students…mixing and matching more veteran photographers with young hungry photographers is a stew i like to cook…makes for a good meal in my opinion…

thanks for checking in here John…i am always honored…

    cheers, david

  23. HAIK…

you have been such a good spirit and adviser since we met in California….i may be out again soonest..maybe between Christmas and New Year’s….do not worry, if i come to L.A. i will contact you right away…i do look forward to seeing you again….

    cheers, david

  24. GLENN….

i want to publish some of your aborigine work….i am assuming this would be your favorite essay to publish….am i right on this?? if not, let me see soonest whatever you would most like to publish…you are one of my very first online friends…hey amigo, this gives you a special spotlight!!!

    cheers, david

  25. haik!

thanks for the words… yes, i’ve taken special css care :)) ….

and great tip by the way, to link to this site… i’ve done it just now… get the burning started…

    cheers,
    anton

  26. WOW WOW WOW! :)))))))

LOOKS SO BEAUTIFUL…i just left a comment for Anton and is beautiful Sugar….

no time to write now, but i just want to say this

Big bib contratulations to David Alan Harvey for his tireless efforts and uncommon vision to turn the “success” of his wildly read blog into something even more significant than a family of drifting, wayward folk into a powerful community that generates and celebrates through photographs and words this remarkable and mystery passing life. I stand in humble admiration for all that you and this community have accomplished. What a remarkable gift to all and to your readers at this time of the year when giving and fellowship seems to be at the front of all we speak upon.

Big big congratulations to Anton, Tom, Chris, Eric, Erica, Mike, Andrew, Patricia and all of y’all that worked so tirelessly to make this winter flow the flaming rose that it is! i’ve just spent the last 15 minutes sniffing around and looking at everything!!!! :))))
    Thrilled!

When after October, David announced that the blog was ending but the dream was continuing, i was ecstatic, but in the end what was the blog if not a community culled together by words and images and a burning need to sing out into the day and night about all that this life touches….though some were nervous and uncertain, i thought: fuck yea, fuck yea, grow this place electric!….and after these last 2 1/2 months, to see the fruit of all that labor punch itself through the layers of snow and to melt all that cold and drifting winter lake into the lotus of light…..I am so proud of y’all….

and special nod to Anton, this pipe dream is tunnelling in ways that even a corn-pipe fuelled dream could not have imagined!!!

    ok, running running running

congratulations yall for this bloom amid the winter snow!

    hugs
    bob

p.s. JOHN VINK: :)))) emerging?…aren’t you still emerging? ;))))….until the dying days of our breath, right? :)))))))

  27. WOW… wonderfull… I just gave it a glance and I really really like it… got Job!!!.. I can’t wait to be back at my house to check and browse it for full.. hugh and Complimenti..David Anton and whoever worked on it..

  28. Well here we are..again..all the creativity and hours of work everyone has put in, especially DAH and Anton have blossomed..it is fantastic to see the evolution of a community, of an idea, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the images and stories that we have all been pouring ourselves into over the last how many ever months. My sense is that my project wouldn’t still be in progress if it all of you had not lent support and an ear; I have learned much about sticking to one thing, and I want to thank you all for that…

  29. A message from Kyunghee Lee in Busan, South Korea…

“Please help me …I can’t log in new ‘Burn”
I don’t know how to log in there. :)))
I’m very poor in computer, too. hahaha

    HAPPY HAPPY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
    Hugs,
    Kyunghee Lee”

  30. Dear Anton,

Very touched essay… It reminds me the memories of mine.

When I was a student of university, I had taught one middle school girl student to earn my school expenses. She was ill of severe congenital Diabetes. At last she was blind when she was 20years old. But she was very brave! Now She works as a telephone operator and married and becomes Mom!!! I hope Birgit grows very positively. I’m sure that Your love for hor makes her healthy and positive.

Thank you very much for your beautiful essay.

  31. Oh! I have done well!
Thank you so so much for your warm care, Patricia! :)))
It is 2am in Korea now. I had tried to access “Burn” till now. hahaha
Now I must to go bed to work tomorrow.

    David and All Friends here,
Congratulations on beatifull start of “Burn” !!!
I would like to do my best to be a best member of this community and to be a best photographer.

    Ari,
Thank you so much for visit me. I had very joyful time with you. :)))
I enjoyed your pictures very much … very nice works!
I wonder when do you leave Korea. Hope to enjoy Korea!!

  32. A beautiful, glorious, splendiferous site, one and all! You guys should be extremely proud of yourselves on putting up a such a wonderful piece of digital work. Did I say job well done? No, I didnt, so this is a job well done. Excellently well done, magnificently well done. Did I say glorious? Yes, I did, so I can knock off this exercise in suck up right now. Guys, light gray text on a dark gray background is not a good idea. Trust me on this one.

  33. KYUNGHEE LEE..

so very nice to hear from you my friend..

you are certainly at the very epicenter of our community…and you are certainly also at the very epicenter of fine photography….

please enjoy tranquility and know that all is well….

i am wishing that we meet again very soon….

    cheers, david

  34. WOW! Check out this great new home we have here. I’m going to go grab a glass of wine and wander around for a while looking at all of the new rooms. I’m really looking forward to the great times we’ll have here. So many possibilities…

    Thanks David.

  35. Well… this is nice. Still learning my way around. Like the Decor, nice to see the crew moving over.

Good shot Anton, David, everyone who stepped up!

Looks like we’ve all got some work to do to keep this place rocking. I hope to make something this year, I’ve got a few ideas.

Hope to see you all in Perpignan or NY or “in the field” next year!

  36. AKAKY…

yes, we are still testing ….we thought of having the front cover dark as is, and then going to black text on white in the inside for long text pieces like yours will surely be….hey, since you are one of our prolific writers , we want to keep you happy….we sort of know you are right, but we just love the “look” of white on gray….but, ultimately function must prevail….dammit!!!

by the way, what i really want to have you do is be all of, or part of, a leading essay….i envision a New Yorker style piece…think tank stuff…humor think tank stuff…maybe only one or two pictures…either closely related or loosely related depending on the story…

what about the upcoming inauguration?? you do think thank on one of the most historic events in our short history…you do this from your living room ….we use ONE picture from this historic event..not a picture of Obama, but something from the street..in D.C. or maybe from anywhere….just thinking…

    any interest???

    cheers, david

  37. Site looks great – but as far a readability, black type on white might be to stark when you want to maintain some subtlety to the design. Maybe just reverse the tones you have now, to dark gray type on light gray background.

  38. wow… burn is beautiful. love the splashes of red here and there… sizzling.
great job, DAH and Anton, and all who contributed!
though i do agree with akaky on the color scheme.
    it’s delicious and elegant
but simply harder for me to read at longer intervals.

DAH– would you like me, at some point, to contribute an essay on my street family?
    let me know.. :))

woohooo!! our new ‘home’ is so beauty-full.
can’t wait to see essay, essays and more essays!! :D

    MWAH!**

    katia

    .

  39. I too adore the look of light gray print on a dark gray background but am finding it not the easiest to read. I agree with Dave McG–dark gray print on a light grey background would be perfect. I’m afraid black print on white would be jarring. This is all about subtlety…but readability helps!

One more question: is the time GMT? Can’t figure it out.

Pretty amazing when you think about it–so few suggested changes or complaints. You done GOOD!!!

Patricia who loves our new house

  40. Lovely. A rather sumptuous affair this burn business. Gorgeously put together. I can almost smell the paper it’s not printed on, if you you know what I mean.

A fine achievement. I look forward to its continued evolution.

Now if I may, there’s a chance I can get this stop motion thing on TV which would mean a lot to me. Please vote this up if you feel so inclined. Thank you.

  41. The formatting here is easy and pleasant, somehow. This is a place where one could easily spend quite a bit of time which is contrary to how things tend to be on the internet. It’s quite easy to linger and just read in a relaxed fashion much like a quality magazine or book. I don’t know how this has been achieved but would love to hear from the makers about the process that brought this about.

Now I must read and linger some more. I will try to take it all in. To absorb and internalize it all, somehow.

Thanks for the experience and the experiences yet to come.

    Paul Treacy

  42. What do I think about the upcoming historic inauguration? I think the wrong guy is being inaugurated, but I couldn’t convince enough other people that I knew what I was talking about.

  43. Gustavo Aragon Garcia

    David, all
i feel like in a strange place intimidating for me but ok lets start to burn the best of us.
    sorry for my english.
Gracias y buena suerte para todos.

  44. interested party

    GORGEOUS AND AMAZING for sure.

    but…

Hasn’t it been well tested that black type on white is easier to read? Can you make that change now when it’s early on? At least in the comments section?

congrats to all who have made this a reality, it’s going to grow into a wonderful resource.

but don’t try to re-invent readability — black on white, like KATIA says!

  45. KELLY…

i hope everyone remembers that YOU came up with the BURN title !!! i will certainly never forget…many many thanks….it is fun to back and look at the conversation that was taking place when we were looking for a title…i was locked on to Emerge…then, you made the BURN suggestion, along with two or three others, and you can read me change my mind right online…

    cheers, david

  46. AKAKY….

i was interested in a story from you on the inauguration…the event…not on Obama…i must admit did forget about your mis-directed political persuasions, but still think you are the man for the job of interpreting all of the hoopla etc that surrounds any inauguration…

    GUSTAVO…

it feels a bit strange to me as well…..in any case, your contributions are most welcome…

    cheers, david

  47. DAVID,

Life has been rather hectic this past week with me flying in a rush in Europe to arrange a few things for my return to Belgium in March. This is one of the reasons I am a bit late in sending you my essat… Having said this, in the rare spare time I have had over the past days, I have been working hard on the text for my “Lords of the Ring” essay. What was meant to be just a couple of pages became much longer with 15-20 pages of text capturing the exchanges I have had with the boxers, insights about their lives. Clearly, there is no way this can be used as it stands for the on-line magazine but I hope that this text can be the backbone of a book if we ever push it to that stage. I will send it to you tomorrow. As you have seen this project develop from the beginning, I hope that you will find this text interesting and worthy of publishing maybe at some stage. Separately, beyond what I have writtem myself, I am now in contact with a local writer who has published many articles on boxing. We have started to talk over the phoone and he seemed interested to possibly partner for a book but nothing is for sure here… I will show him my photographs early next year….

Finally, I have further edited my photographs and hopefully can also send these to you before end of week. I presume that I should use the guidelines for submission that you have shared on the site but if you prefer to get this in any other way, just let me know.

    Cheers,

    Eric

  48. Hola a toda la comunidad BURN!!!

Great site! Nice way to start 2oo9 with plenty of energy. I’ll check every day and be part of the community. The Fellowship of Burn/ Always looking forward. Cheers from Argentina.

    P.

  49. DAH

Congratulations on your two new houses! If the one at the beach is half as beautiful as this one it must be really gorgeous (I suspect it is). Burn looks great. Congrats to everyone involved in making it possible.

    Abrazo,

    Nacho

  50. ANTON…

“BURN is very cool. I enjoyed the “Sugar” piece. What a tragic, but lovely body of work.”

These are the words of Chris Johns, Editor, National Geographic Magazine in a private email to me this morning….

    Nuff, said…we are rolling sweet….

    cheers, david

  51. Very first of all,

    ANTON,
I was lucky to see you at work on this website, the push and pull of lines and texts, colors and underlines, and always with that final ending period. It is truly beautiful, interactive, simple, and sophisticated. Your essay looks wonderful…sweet, tragic, personal, and yet familiar… And still one of my all time favorite titles. Thank you for starting us off, it will be a privilege for anyone to follow you. Period.

    LANCE and PAUL,
Thank you for posting, I hope you all enjoy! I’ll never make it in the PR world…but I’m happy for the BURN family to see…

    ALL-

Let the games begin. The excitement, enthusiasm, chatter and images always keep me coming back “here.” The new “here” is that much more sophisticated, serious, playful, and image ready. Here’s to many more years, pictures, stories, and conversations…
A toast to all of you.

    Cheers,
    Anna

  52. okay, just checking in again.. DAVID.. i need just a little time.. i have Christmas print orders to fill at the moment (thankfully).. Also, do i talk to ANTON or who for image sizes and/or multimedia specs? i know it ain’t you answering those questions brother! :)

    okay.. working..

    lance

  53. LANCE…

no pressure…take your time…i just wanted you to know i want you on deck…i do know the answer for image size 1600 pixels on the long side…and i do know where have some cool slideshow software, but yes , check with Anton on the specs….you can have a short story and slideshow as well…

    cheers, david

  54. ERIC…

how close are you to publishing Lords of the Ring??? i think we got the edit down pretty tight when you were in New York, but i also know you are still shooting so i do not want to rush you..if you have music slide show, so much the better along with your text…please let me know soonest…

  55. ALL….

i will be flying all day today…heading to Durango, Colorado and mom’s cooking…i will return here as soon as possible, probably Christmas Eve…

we will be ready soon with more of your photographs….

    cheers, david

  56. WOW it looks Great – I’ll take the right time to visit this hot place as I come back from holidays ;-) Merry Chritmas to you all! Ciao! Alberto – Milano, Italia :-)

  57. Really nice page! but, but, but: it is optmized for a screen resolution of 1280 px width – something very common but far not enough common to build the page for this resolution…
I, for example can see burn only when being at home on but not on my notebook… and i’m rarely home…

  58. Hi David,
I am back from BKK and just sent you a link to the edit and an e-mail…..in case you have some time…. hope you are well .
    Cheers,
    katharina

  59. DAVID.

Hope you make it to Durango smoothly. I am snowed in in Santa Fe right now. It’s absolutely gorgeous (I’m running back out to take more photos) but no one is going ANYWHERE…other than by foot, snowshoe or cross country ski. Flew out here Thursday and the airports were a mess. Safe travels!

Burn is a great Christmas/Chanukah gift for all.

  60. Wow – great job all involved! Along with our virtual new home here, I am finally settling into my new brick and mortar home and it’s an inspiring view. Thanks! I’m looking forward to another GREAT year full of new adventures, conversations, and realizations. All the best to everyone this holiday season…

  61. To ALL-

I am sure you are all getting into a celebration mood. In Cinci, things will be rather quiet this year. No family reunion for the Espinosa family…just the four of us, which I guess is just fine… This is our last Christmas in the US before heading back to Europe… Seems like time is running out here faster than I thought… So many things I thought I was going to do in the US and I have not done half of them… I am slowly a bit stressed out. Among others things, I was hoping to have another 6 months until the summer to shoot and complete fully “Lords of the Ring”. Most of the competition are happening over the summer or after spring… Little left for me between now and March 1. Somehow I have some good shots but I feel that I would need some more time to really nail the subject… Hopefully enough pictures for a decent slideshow but I am afraid maybe not enough just yet for a book which is what I was hoping for eventually. Anyway, we will do our best with whatever time we have left…. Sometimes miracles happen when under pressure… so will see!

Today, I sort of had my Christmas before the actual date. Just had a delivery of photobooks that I had ordered. In prime position, Cypher from our friend Charles Peterson. I said this already when I was staying at David’s place that the book is great, so now, I have my own opy… I remember David saying that if photographers were buying each other’s book, they would be fine…well, I am practicing this right now with utmost pleasure as Cypher is really powerful. Great B&W medium format. Great quality of printing….Must have been interesting to shoot these moves with such a camera Charles!!!!! Charles worked on for 6 years and this shows…so many great shots… Back to my initial complaint, I wish I had a few more months for working my essay :):)::. Beyond Charles’ book (by the way published by Powerhouse like “Living Proof” from David!!!!) I also got a couple others, all great books. “Vanishing Breed” from Allard is really an interesting one that I had not seen before…Lance, I am sure that you know this one but if you do not, get yourself a copy! It is on topic….cowboy and the west all over!!!! Last one is “Black in America” from Reed. Another very good choice!!!! Nothing more satisfying that discovering books…

Anyway, I am going to stop rumbling for now…. I wish you all a Meery Christmas and holiday break!!!! Take lots of great pictures from your celebrations!

    Cheers,

    Eric

  62. this looks great! I as well was a little bit sad to “move on” from the old site and bookmark this one as the new “to go to” website…but its great (thanks! anton, DAH, and crew) and Anton’s Sugar images are very very very nice…my family has been touched by diabetes and my wife works in Public Health so she is affected by it as well and this essay was a very touching and different way to look at it…very moving, thanks again Anton and DAH.

    Happy Holidays.

DAVID I will be sending a selection of images (my 40 edits) to you by the end of the first week in Jan.

    ~ Chris H

  63. ERIC….

you are under no pressure whatsoever to publish your essay now…yes yes, take another six months or whatever you need…i do think that probably you will not really need that much time, but you be the judge of when you are finished…it might be nice to have your work published now under “work in progress” instead of as a final essay…do you have saved all of the online dialogue between us??? as we mentioned in New York, i do think the “behind the scenes” conversation between us would be of great interest to our readers here…anyway, Eric, you decide….this is your baby….i may push you, but i would never rush to publish before you or anyone has totally realized their efforts….

now, Patricia is also not finished shooting, but she has chosen to publish a “teaser” now…again, this is HER choice…i think she sees this as an opportunity to be seen even though more pictures will come before she starts looking for a publisher this spring….

i sure am missing those magic days in New York……

    cheers, david

  64. DAVID,

No worries! I am really not feeling the pressure from you to publish, on the contrary. I am also totally “cool” with showing work that may not be finished. As a matter of fact, many have seen the essay progress over time on the blog and many have provided very valuable feedback so the pressure does not come from that. Pressure if any would come from the clock…. As I was saying, the time I have to spend in Cinci being able to hang around with these kids is counted and therefore, I sense this story is coming to an end while, ideally, I would have liked to carry on for longer as I feel there is more to be done on this topic than what I have already got. Having said this, I remember what you said that it is also good to put a time frame on your work so I have a narrow window left and will make the most out of it…

Regarding the essay, I will most certainly put together the exchanges we have had to share as “behind the scenes”. I have already started putting this together. I will also take your advice to put an actual slideshow together with music etc and will send it to you when ready… Technology and I are not friends but worse come to worse, I will bug Anton physically early March…after all, I may as well benefit from living next to him in Belgium (he will soon wish I was on a different planet) :):):):)…We all have seen the man knows how to habdle tech stuff. I am still in awe of the site he has developed for us all.

New York was indeed very magical… the place itself, the creativity… I felt like I was in a bubble for a few days… Moments like that is what make this little adventure so worth it….

Anyway, have a great time with the family!

    Cheers, Eric

  65. Well I don’t have ‘Vanishing Breed’ but certainly I know about it. Just the other day I read Allard’s rodeo chapter in ‘Portraits of America’ and it was like a punch to the gut. I think it was the same day David asked me to get my text in order for ‘Thirst for Grit’. Shit, Allard is a poet and he’s written this beautiful little piece with fantistic pictures on…. you guessed it, rodeo. I know my project is different but I kinda wish I hadn’t seen that right then.

  66. I jump back a few posts… I must agree x Claudius. Burn is not really for a 13 inch screen. You do have to scroll down to see the whole home page or the single pics. A bit annoying considering the really neat layout otherwise. You’d be surprised at how fast the owners of large screens plugged into megabytes of bandwidth forget about the majority: those with smaller screens and a rickety ADSl connection. Usually those on the other side of Digital Divide are the ones who are most isolated and lack the kind of upscale information sites like burn will provide. I for example have seen about one twentieth of the Magnum Inmotion essays. The others just take too much time to download.

  67. Where do I start? I better start by relaxing and wishing everyone a very happy & merry Christmas!!! Apart from the general mood, 2009 will be full of beautiful chances – just look at this place here! – and if I have a wish for all of us than that we keep cool enough to not let them pass by unnoticed. I really believe in this! And I really hope for all of us!

As to myself, I am just very, very happy right now – and I could just start right over praising this wonderful community we have here. This time it goes in direction of Bob, Eric and especially JOE!!! They allowed me to brainstorm and ping-pong my thoughts around and always came up with a good question or two that would help me clarify my mind. In Germany you have the saying, that someone sometimes “cannot see the forest because of all of the trees”. And that was mostly what had happened with me. Once the wheels are turning in the mudhole, you have to take either a new approach or time off. As I hate to take time off, I was kind of getting on peoples nerves by asking, asking, asking. You kind of saw it here. Bob and Eric really took time to write (Eric, I am sorry, I did not manage yet to respond to your last loooong email, but it has been on my mind the last days and it has helped very much) while Joe really pushed things incredibly. What I like about him, is not only the thoughtfullness and sharpness, but that photography somehow seems holy for him. At least that is my impression. He is disappointed if people only go half way, if they do not comply with the demands of their project. I love this!! Mainly because that is how I feel too: If you have a project you have the responsibility to do it the best possible way. Not only because it is your name that is written below, no, for me it feels like a duty, a responsibility towards the subject. A little like being a tool, yourself, responsible for best doing the task that was given to you. I am a little obsessed with this. Maybe more than would be good for me. But … that is how I am. And that is how it is.

So with the help of this community I think (I am sure) I nailed the whole issue now. It will mean I will have to restart. All the portraits from ASW after the workshop (the workshop being something special thus staying in) will have to be redone or … will disappear. It is a pity but it is necessary. And then something (in my eyes) wonderful will replace it. I sound stupid now – please forgive – but it is just that it is fitting like a glove!! It is so much me and so much what I stand for – which was the main reason for me being blind on one eye – that it just gives me the shivers.

Ok. At this point, once again, I have to thank Joe. Thank you Joe!! You gave me this one idea that really help me bridge to a point where I could see again. From that point on it was just very, very easy. Actually it was all there. And you, Joe, handed me over my spectacles – and a piece of cake. Forever thankful I am. I owe you.

    so…
Now I NEED my coffee …

  68. Hello guys! Wonderful to see everybody here! Enjoyed very much Sugar, so sweet, so refreshing, so full of emotions.
    and really nice website.
    and excellent concept.
i will enjoy here further! thanks!
(and as I don’t take pictures for long, i will simply be part of the big lazy silent audience!)

    Thanks
    jerome

  69. LASSAL…

please do not throw out what you did at the workshop just yet…i think you would be wise to get going on your “new start” and then compare very carefully with what you did so instinctively…i honestly never did understand your frustration with the simplicity of your original idea…BUT, nothing beats just doing it..giving it a try….take your new enthusiasm and put it to practical use…

i would be very anxious to give you some space here for your essay…show us what you mean…mean what you show us….

    peace and Merry Christmas, david

  70. Hi there and merry xmas! (I’m already on the rumanian beer and waiting to open the finnish not-really-vodka!)

Nice looking place here, congrats on that. I would have maybe waited till four or five essays were ready for the grand opening, as anton might get a bit of unnecessary flak. Oh well, a great power implies even greater responsability! The slideshows are nice, but as John says, maybe a low-res version or something that could be downloaded would make things easier for many. Apart of the critique (rather complain early when it’s fixable), really looking forwards to see how this evolves!

  71. JOHN VINK…

hmmmm, i am a bit confused…we tweaked out the layout for my 13′ screen and the cover photo and logo just fit on mine with no scroll…what am i missing here?? 75% of the readers here have 15″ or larger, so we were trying to give max layout size without killing the folks with small screens….i have almost zero tech expertise, so please enlighten me on this issue…

    cheers, david

  72. JONI…

we thought a lot about how many essays to start with…we finally concluded that since we want “features” to hang on the front page awhile, this was the best way…yes, it will take longer to build up content, but by the first week in january , you will never remember we started with only one story…we may come up with some way to rotate the stories on and off the front page…besides, we are going to give you new singles constantly and the conversations will go on as per always…by the time we get “work in progress” going , there will be a lot to keep you busy here…and, of course, i want a story from you when you are ready…

yes, Anton caught some flak, but was quickly defended in the best way….hey, any of us who “go public” are always set up for criticism….however, i contend that when folks get really harsh instead of constructive, it is most likely they have no body of work themselves….the best way to critique any particular style or story , is to lay down on the table a “counterpoint”…a powerful alternative…cynicism alone is cynicism alone…go read Chris Bickford’s comment under Anton’s essay….the boy nailed it…

    cheers, david

  73. Oh, the welcome back thing in the comments is nice…

DAH: cool, so you had it sorted out, I thought I had to be the sober voice of reason as usual ;-) indeed looking forwards to when there’s half a dozen essays up here and how they interact with each other… on the comments, I’m not sure how necessary they are under each story, they sort of make it drag a bit for my taste, maybe if they were less accessible… but you want interactive so you’ll get it! :-D

on slideshows, I have “last orders (cardiff by night)” in a very showable state, I’ve done lots of edits during the last year and one was briefly shown and another part of a slideshow… other stuff, well, I have “the fountains” of which I sent you a single and goes slower, been working on it since may 2007 and I think it’s half way through to something… and now I started “common diaries” that I wouldn’t like to show as it will be quite text heavy (was thinking about how to curate it during each station or so to actually have a physical diary)… of course, I’m open to ideas, though!

  74. i have a small ( not what u think !!! ;-) ) 12′ incher (girls love it !!! )
and i see no problems viewing the site… i have also seen all magnum movies with no problem on downloading times… i also have a bigger 15 inch screen, but i dont see any major difference, except that some dont like it coz it HURTS…
    laughing
    ( sorry , couldn’t help it )

  75. Unless you make the photos smaller, you have to scroll on a 13″ screen. It would be a image size and logo size issue. John Vink’s website is perfect for my 13″ screen, but the pictures are much smaller. I also have a bookmarks bar, tabs and a status bar, so the viewing area is smaller than if I did not those tools in use. Just some thoughts.

    Happy Holidays.

  76. TOM LEININGER…

i am listening , but still i do not understand why horizontal pictures show up perfectly on my 13″ laptop without a scroll…i see picture and logo simultaneous….the trend for the new breed of online magazines is to go as large as possible..and we worked hard to make it so that pictures can be viewed full screen for the essay slide shows (click red button lower right hand corner of picture)…i guess it is always a compromise, but my inclination is to play for the larger screens…as i said earlier, 75% of the readers here have a large screen …but, still thinking, thinking…

    cheers, david

  77. “Apple”+”-”
The pictures resize along with the text … You will have to check how far you can go and still read.
(sorry, do not remember the keys for pc…. Was it “Ctrl”+”-” … ?)

  78. The only thing that bothers me is, that I have to type my name/email/website in every time I leave a comment. It would be nice to have a “remember me” button.

  79. ALL….
we are all fucking photographers and this is 200fucking9…
BIGGER IS BETTER..,. we dont need thumbnails…
have u ever tried to watch a movie in an ipod screen..?????
then try the same movie in a theater… see any difference??? i do!!!!
plus Lassal is right… there is one million keybord shortcuts to make it smaller…
the problem is how to make it bigger, god damn it… not smaller..
    please, all, get it together….
A 20 inch screen from Samsung is only $120 bucks… and plugs in any laptop…
jesus crisis…!!!!!! enough with all the whining, enough …
this is high end photography… its not mend to be seen in an ipod…..!!!!!!

  80. DAVID …

I’ll leave ASW-Tuscany in. I thought I mentioned it, sorry if I did not. The concept for Tuscany is ok. For a workshop. I felt it needed a larger idea to take it on. I am just talking about the concept here … but the images arise out of it. I cannot push the concept from Tuscany to a point to include people from all over without it looking … completely over the top.

But Tuscany is fine and ok for what it is. I would like to leave it in as the starting point. I personally like to see how things evolved.

Thanks for offering me a place here to show the work. I would be honored. And my work would feel honored too :)

Tuscany as a module is finished as it is. You could have it, if it is round enough for you – after all, it consists of merely 6 portraits.
The rest of ASW will restart now. But … It will be more work than the Tuscany Portraits… It would not be realistic to expect any major group of pictures before summer. But I am sure you will like the idea behind it.

  81. Lassal,

I do not have to re-enter my name, mail and site each time I write a comment…. In fact, everytime I come to the “leave a reply” window, there is this phrase for me “Welcome back Ana Yturralde”

  82. haha, i’ve not seen any bitching, whining and moaning to speak of in this thread anyway…

    :-)

ben (also liking the welcome back)

  83. Yeah Ana, it is strange. The system welcomes me back too, but then I get an error message when I go onto “submit” and it asks me for my data again … Dunno …

It is just happening again … :/

  84. I was one of the “originals” and I want to be one here too. Congratulations for this great project!…I have to say that I’ll miss the original blog but this one will be even beter!

    Un abrazo.
    Carlos Rubin

  85. Congratulations on the launch of Burn. Got the feed in my reader and am looking forward to viewing content that rolls in…

As a member of a few niche online communities myself, I think it’s very important to be open to all outside voices and make an effort to avoid collectivist insularity. It can be difficult because the relationships you create with your frequent contacts are often the fuel that propels you in your creative endeavors. But one of the things I’ve learned over the years is that inspiration and insight often comes from unknown sources and people you never thought of….

As creators and consumers of photography, art and life, I think we would be best served if we can evolve the online dialogue and begin to create bridges between the various, unique and interesting communities developing right now.

    peace, and best wishes…

    Bryan

  86. LASSAL….

yes, i would love to publish the work you did in Tuscany as is..and , of course, i await with great interest where you go from here….you well know my motto is evolution and revolution, so wherever you “travel” i will be keen to be a voyeur…

isn’t there some kind of “remember me” button?? i get “remembered” and so do others..hmmmm, i will check on that one…you, of all people, need to be remembered…i remember you even without a button….

    CARLOS…

you are indeed one of the ORIGINALS….i do hope you will come to feel as at home here as on the original blog…please let us know what we can do to make things better…of course, we cannot do everything everyone wants, but i do think things are much easier here..at least for me….many fewer clicks for one thing….be sure to send your favorite pictures….we already have a lot to edit from, but we will always keep an eye out for you amigo….

    JONI…

i look forward to Cardiff by Night…we need a strong text as well please…

yes, i too have been wondering about the individual pictures being “blogable”….the idea was that i would only be here under “dialogue” for my comments and the individual photographers would be responsible for responding to whatever comments came their way under their own stories and singles…it seems to work…right now, there are about a 150 comments spread out over Anton’s essay and the singles….and another 140 or so here….which means that some people only want to respond to particular pictures and others prefer a more general chat here…anyway, let’s give it some time to see what happens when there are more essays , more singles etc etc…we can always tweak it out to make the most sense , for most people, most of the time….

    cheers, david

    December 24, 2008 at 1:39 pm Edit

Happy holidays to all, and may 2009 offer the light, subjects, time & exhibit/book/magazine opportunities you most desire.

If you’d like to give yourself a special gift or 2 or 3 this season, check out Trolley Books at http://www.trolleybooks.com/books.php

Then email Trolley’s managing editor Hannah Watson at hannah@trolleybooks.com

Tell her you’re from David Alan Harvey’s blog and she will give you an amazing 40% discount on your order. Today I received my 3 presents-to-myself and have just finished weeping my way through Paolo Pellegrin’s “Double Blind: War In Lebanon 2006.” Oh my god, what a powerful use of photography, and Scott Anderson’s text is perfect–spare & searing.

My gratitude to Trolley’s founding editor, Gigi Giannuzzi, for letting his gut reaction to Paolo’s photos lead to his publishing this book. DAH described Gigi as a man who “loves [books] so much that he publishes instinctively and without any thought of ‘commercial appeal’…he does not do ‘readership tests’….he goes by his gut and then scrambles like a madman to try to sell enough of his little masterpieces to be able to go on to the next….”

Let’s do what we can to keep him from having to scramble TOO hard! Who knows? Maybe Gigi’s next masterpiece might be by one of our own. Hold that thought…

    Patricia

  88. David!

I can’t tell you how much I love the concept of Burn Magazine! Hopefully I will have something soon up to snuff and worthy of publishing here. Until then, I will definitely enjoy the magazine!

Just wanted to thank you for all you do for up and coming photographers. You certainly go above and beyond, and it is appreciated!

Merry x-mas to you and yours!

Ah…and don’t forget…when you roll through Austin you need to come visit me and Eli. Beer, shots and bar-b-q are on me!

    Best,

    Bill

  89. ALL

Man, you drop out for a little while and look what happens! You miss everything. And to think I was still waiting for the second round of “assignments”;-)

What a potentially historic moment. Congratulations to everyone that’s worked so hard to put this all together. Well well done!

I’m burried in snow here in Southern Maine, so I hope all are having a holiday season, where ever you may be.

    abrazos,
    Charlie
    http://charliemahoney.net

P.S. DAH- Love the selected photographs section and the bocce photo. As a photographer it must be nice to know that you can confidently hand the camera over to a family member and not get a photo of their finger;-) Clearly, talent runs in the family.

  90. wow – what can i say… amazing. when david said he was closing the blog for an online magazine – i was a bit sad… but this is incredible. i knew i should not doubt david’s vision. this is very exciting! anton, and all – you did an amazing job. kelly – love the title Burn!

i am in california with my family – having a relaxing time (after i went to the wrong airport and missed my flight…). back in dc this weekend – then nyc for new years!!

happy holidays to my BURN family!

  91. Okay, folks, it is time for me to stop hiding here in the egregious mold pit wherein I while away the hours until my death and return to hearth and home, kith and kin, there to partake of the Christmas spirit and share the blessings of the season with those nearest and dearest to me, and I think I can say, from the bottom of my heart, that I wish that every one of those mooching bastards was somewhere else. As I seem to be the one stuck with these clowns, I am going to do my best to be of good cheer and pray for a speedy end to the season. I think I can say, and with no fear of contradiction, that Ebeneezer Scrooge was a deeply misunderstood man. In any case, I wish all here a very Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukah, and a Happy and Prosperous New Year for us all. And I know that I speak for everyone when I say that I am sending all the best holiday wishes I can for Burn magazine. May it Burn down the house in 2009, preferably with as many of my relatives, their friends, and their annoying pets as I can pack inside the door.

  92. So much has happened in the last few weeks. The name is great–the concept exciting. I am way behind on the comments but wanted to offer my congratulations as well as sending wishes for a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. So wonderful to be entering 2009 with BURN in place–ready to show great work and touch hearts around the world.

  93. Gustavo Aragon Garcia

    David, all

Peace in your heart to all of you burn
Feliz Navidad y Prospero año nuevo
    sorry for my english

  94. DAH: I’ll start editing when I get back to Cardiff in January and work on a couple of pieces of text with a friend. I’m not keen on captions (I like them at the end of a book), but I guess that an introductory text and something in between could work.

  95. ALL….

i have been trying to get to Durango, Colorado for three days!!! the weather has not been cooperating and i have been in and out of airports so much that had i been shooting (which i should have done) i might have a story myself on Christmas at the airport…

in any case, giving it another try this morning…which means i will be offline all day….so many of you have uploaded some very interesting singles and we have several essays almost ready to go…between tomorrow and New Year’s BURN should really have its legs…

    peace to all…

    cheers, david

  96. DAVID …Thanks!
I will have a look at the tuscany workshop results again and see if there is any way to pack it adequately for here … Have to check on that, because the project is so small in size …

    ANTON …
any chance to include a flash-file? Or any other movie file?

  97. BRYAN FORMHALS…

    i could not agree more….

i look forward to your input and will be checking out your gallery La Pura Vida as soon as i possibly can (now in travel hell)….please know that BURN is in development….and also please know that my range of appreciation of various photographic styles swings wide..i love the best of any genre..i think you will see this in the coming days and weeks ahead…i also know that i cannot be somebody that i am not..so, what you will see could reflect an overall sensibility not embraced by everyone…

know one thing Bryan…your thoughts and suggestions are most appreciated…the windows are wide open in this house…

    cheers, david

  98. Merry Christmas one and all…

A wee web design note… a lot of web pages have a little picture that comes up beside the page header in the tab bar of my explorer. Burns is currently just a folded sheet of paper. Anyone got a cool idea of what it should be? A single flame? A lot of flames?

    Cheers!

  99. YESTERDAY, shopping for a gift for my wife, my heart got fractured…..

eugene richards new book (his first in color): The Blue Room…

I’d written at the DAH Road Trip blog previously about some of the pics which were showcased in NG this past year….but….jesus, good god….

one of the extraordinary majestic books of the year (2009!)…..after all these books with open, abandoned room (a la Polidori and all the young photogs to which have been chained to this “trend” in imagery), i gotta tell y’all that Blue Room broke my heart open wide….

i need a few days to digest it and write sensibly about the photographs and the book….but….

i’ve been hit hard, real hard…..

the book is, for now, out of my price range, but im targeting it…4 weeks to save the money, then it’s ours….

of all the times to consider what this work means and what we are after as photographers, it is this book…

David, since you’ve got Jim and Steve, how about a preview from Gene?…then i could write like mad under it :)))

    call u in a few hours…

    running
    MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL…

  105. it is a digression to say this..

love the flat beers and ales of the u.k.
back for a few weeks and david – might be good for a meet?

    and on BURN
it’s fantastic to see more voices being expressed here.. more intelligent, irrelevant, interested and indiscreet voices. already seen new work from photographers i had not heard of and enjoying greatly the varied discourse on this and that..
if there is one thing which burn and the EPF now needs it is to bring the VERY BEST of photography to the fore.. emerging as we all are on every commission into a new territory with unseen dangers and unseen rewards. so.. let the PDN, FLICKR, and whoever else direct people here.. and if they have the balls to speak their mind, show their souls on paper and nurture the gathered animals then burn has indefinite life, and with that the infinite capacity to grow beyond all expectations..

    so..
best get my work edited finally, photos thrown into the pot and fingers crossed for an essay feature.. after all, what else is there to do?
    yeah?
    dya geddit?

flickr is such a stoopid name.

  106. anton or who knows..

what is going on with RSS here?
i clicked the one at the bottom and that takes me only to the rss for the front photo, while i cannot find one for the ‘discussion’ posts..

    am i being stoopid?
was the pope in hitler youth and does he wear prada?
    merry christmas all..

    david

  107. i sit and stare at my box of Provia… it’s this excitement, this burning desire to photograph, that keeps me going… makes the bullshit of ‘every day’ stuff bearable… Can’t wait to share my images that are yet to be made.. Just finished a 10 year project that finalized itself in a documentary film… still learning.. but Burn has me inspired, and I can’t wait to share some of my work- the beginning of a new project… want to feed the fire…. **

  108. David B

Pope/youth questions beats me but I do know for a fact it is prada he admires the most. But I think you wanted to phrase the question as “Is he a he or ….”.

The link is on the bottom of the page – it’s the “Comments Feed”
The actual address to that feed is https://www.burnmagazine.org/comments/feed/

Merry Christmas All and Happy New Year !!!

  109. Well DAVID,

I have worked hard over the past days…. Managed to learn how to use a simple audio editing softare and I have finally assembled some of the coversations I have had with the boxers for my “Lords of the Ring” essay. I have prepared this with music, sound from the gym and the slideshow is ready to be sent…. There is hope in this world. First time ever I do this :):):):) and hopefully, it is a format that Anton will be able to read… Hope you like it.

    Going to bed now….

    Cheers,

    Eric

    all..
this is a great post on BJP about up-comming competitions..
competitions are something i have always avoided.. going more for commissions instead.. but lets face it – competitions seem to be able to get us all further than commissions in a sense.. so i reckon get on to them..
    check here.
    http://www.1854.eu/2008/12/diary_competitions.html

  113. Weired
my post disappeared and now I have got the old one twice …
    Well …
I wanted to thank David B for the link – as I was searching for some competitions too.
And … I was complaining about the age restrictions on most competitions. As if age did matter for a good photo … I do not get this.

  114. DAVID BOWEN…

i am always confused about exactly where you are…so, now U.K.??? yes, i should be there in january if you are still around…yes, commissions better than contests…i am hoping however the EPF will turn into commissions…commissions for shooting here and for a print magazine…yes, dreamland…but , circumstances could be lining up as such…

    cheers, david

  115. LASSAL…

do not forget the EPF…i am NOT a jury member, since i am choosing the jury and have mentored many of the photographers who will be entering…the format for entering this year will be a book format which should be great for you…anyway, details to follow soonest….

    cheers, david

  116. All….

David has asked that I repost the email I recently sent to him about screen resolutions:

    David,

I was trying to follow a conversation on the magazine so I may have missed something, but am I correct in saying that
some people are having problems seeing all of parts of the site without scrolling.

It is not just a function of the screen size. I also depends on the screen resolution settings.

For instance I have a MacBook with a 15 inch screen, but I have the screen resolution set to the highest possible… 1280×800 pixels.

The other settings that I can have it set to though are listed below…

    640×480
    640×480 stretched
    800×500
    800×600
    800×600 stretched
    1024×640
    1024×768
    1024×768 stretched
    1150×720

Of course everything looks different depending on the settings. Monitors resolution options are a function of video card memory and software.

You may want to look at these two sites for more info….

    http://www.thescreamonline.com/technology/monitor/monitor_res.html (general info about resolutions)

http://www.screenresolution.org/ (this site will tell you the number of people using different resolutions and will tell you your settings.)

Hope this helps anyone having troubles. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at pete@petemarovichimages.com

  117. DAVID …
not sure what I should enter to the EPF at present time … Can only restart working on “A Stranger’s Wish” in February … “2 cents” is merely to keep me from exploding … It tells no story … only shows a wandering & wondering eye. Nothing for EPF, I would say, more something for a “snaps”-competition :)

  118. ALL…

new post coming this afternoon…please note that now you may write directly beneath the comment to which you are referring…just see “reply” button…my oh my does this make life easier…also note that clicking on the BURN logo takes you to “home page” no matter where you are…also, more info now under “submissions” on home page…new essays coming this week…..and good singles will be published whenever i get my hands on good singles…i do not know about you, but i feel like going out and shooting for this site…

    back soonest…

    cheers, david

  119. LASSAL…

my oh my , it is a full time job just keeping you enthusiastic about you!!! you are a talented photographer with a terrific project….the world is so full of mediocre photographers pushing mediocre work….so please please keep your confidence going my friend….we need you!! and by the way, i do not care if it is a full time job!!!! i will do it!!

    hugs, david

  120. David

Yes, the “reply” button make it easier for sure, but also it will be difficult fallow after all comments. But this is not important, BURN will grow up anyway. There will be many paths in one time, like veins, or maze.
I have to say I am little confused, I am “road trip” child and it is not easy to jump into your new site for me. Too many pages, too many threats. But soon I will be like fish in ocean I suppose.
I had many thoughts last time about photography and about world, but my damn language skills and my chaotic mind just make my thoughts useless. As usually.
So I will wait for new post.
    take care.

    peace

  121. Let me try this…just for fun.

David, Are you seeing all the comments being made throughout the site thru a feed as you did with road trips? I posted a question under Sugar…it was appropriate to post it there but am curious to know if only the more current threads will be seen or if it all gets sent to you.

  122. CATHY….

yes, i can see everything at once, if that is your question…and this is so nice to be able to answer directly to you so so easily…i am a bit behind, but i will catch up later today…i am trying to get all of the essays edited….just posted Panos, so we will see how that goes!!!

    cheers, david

  123. MARCIN..

well, we can change everything depending on how everyone feels…remember, we did the same with “road trips”?? at one time it was four blogs and we cut it down to one…this is a bit different….my plan is not to comment on the posted pictures..or rarely anyway…it is the photographer’s job to comment on his or her own pictures…you can take it or leave it Marcin

however, the new “dialogue” is the old “road trips”…we can even change the name back to “road trips” if you want…the whole “road trips” archive is here….if you want to comment to everyone, you can go to the bottom and do as usual..but, now this was so easy..i saw a comment you made specifically to me and i can quickly comment back…i might have skipped it before because it would have taken me at least 5 minutes and 5 clicks more to do what i can do right here so so easily…i just do not see any downside….but, you input valued, so tell me , tell me…

you are one of the ORIGINALS, so i want to keep you happy…but , please tell me you can be happy with this!!!

    cheers, david

  124. MARCIN…

plus, my friend , you can quickly see in recent comments if i answered you or not..right??? try Marcin try…this is much much easier…the other way was a maze…this is clear..isn’t it??

    cheers, david

  125. marcin…

plus also at the bottom of the page you can click on the posts feed and the comments feed… which is super great if you’re using firefox or a newsreader…. then you can see the recent comments appear without even refreshing the page you are on…

  126. David

The Burn is just fine for me. I just have to jump into. I need some time.
Like I said I will be like fish in water soon.
The most important thing in “road trip” was disscusion, that’s why one blog was fine, but here everything must grow up in own way. Everything must evolve. And I have to evolve.
    I am not a blogger, I am child of road trip… :)
And if you want make me happy… just keep it grow. It is worth.

  127. DAVID …
thanks so much for your uplifting words … I think I am “too” demanding. At the end I am making photos since when? Since merely a couple of months! And I only really began with it when I came back from your workshop last August. So I should give myself a chance, I know.

There is this huge gap between what I see that I do and what I see that I am after. And I am always sure everybody else can see this gap of mine too. And this gap kinda hurts … That is maily why I am reluctant.

I really should have tried to get an edit-audition with you in the past :)

(“reply” is a nice feature indeed – thanks Anton)

  128. DAVID,

What an evening I had yesterday…. After spending virtually two days editing my boxing work, learning how to do a slideshow, also edit sound of some conversations I had, getting it all done ready to send it to you and Anton, I ended up checking the site of the Ohio boxing federation to see if there was any upcoming event or competition that I should try to attend (as I said before, my days before March 1 are now counted)… By luck, I found that there was a big event with PROs and amateurs as happening that very same evening…. I hesitated a lot as this was happening in a big basketball stadium with some Pros and I was fearing that there would be no way for me to get close to the boxers but, after many back and forths, I went and I had the most amazing evening…. First, by the time I got there, after all this time that I have spent in the different gyms of the city, everyone knows me by now… Within minutes of me getting there, some of the trainers and amateurs boxers got in into the locker room unopened to the public and reserved for the fighters and the trainers… was amazing to see the boxers get dressed prior to the fights, concentrate, motivate themselves for the big fight… combination of fear, stress and arrogance to impress… talked with many of the rappers, often friends of the boxers and who come to rap for their freinds at the start of their fights when the boxer goes to the ring… what an atmosphere! I also ended up being able to talk as well with some boxing legends like Aaron Pryor who was there as his son is a promising pro who was also fighting that night…. I took a few pictures of father and son…. great great night all round with I hope some of the best pictures I have taken so far…. so back home, after getting excited by a few of the shots which hopefully you will like, I ended up thinking that it would make a lot of sense to try to integrate these into my essay…so, bottom-line, unless you would pefer me to send you what I have already done, I might take a week or so to the new stuff edited and integrated…

    Cheers,

    Eric

  129. David, is there a way to be notified by email that someone has responded to something you wrote and have a link that takes you to the thread with a link in the email? Also a search (google searches work well) to be able to find old conversations might be helpful. I am excited and have a great feeling about this new site!

  130. Eric that’s awesome! I’ve had simmular experiences like that and it’s a great feeling to know you’ve made those relationships. I think David would agree that if you are good to them in return those relationships may last a lifetime. This experience might be a signal to do a longer term story that continually develops? What do you think?

  131. Rafal Pruszynski

    Hi David,

Im sorta ready to submit but not 100%. I have a 36 photo edit ready as well as the text and will be processing my files which will take a week or so to do. I was wandering if you wanted to maybe look at it and give me some last minute suggestions before it goes over to you.

I could post the set here for you to look but maybe it would be better done by e-mail? You have my email anyway, I think I have yours.

  132. JASON,

I would certainly have considered a longer term story but as I said to some before, unfortunately, my stay in Cincinnati is coming to an end in March. I am heading back to Europe so as you can imagine, it will be impossible for me to carry on with this particular story. This is also why I have a great sense of urgency for the remaining few weeks and hopefully will make the most of it… If only I could have a few more nights like last Saturday, I would be well on my way but those occasions are rare…. As far as my relationship with the boxers, I have been fortunate to develop some true friendship with some of them….. Will keep you posted on how the story is progressing. Hopefully will have an edit on the coming week or two. Thanks for your question.

    Erioc

  133. RAFAL…

i do not have your e-mail….send a note to my AOL account please or to the submissions post here….i have been wanting to hear from you…ready to look at your final….i love that essay….

    cheers, david

  134. Oh my god ! JINJU from Flickr is here.
I respect your work JINJU. i have expanded my photographic horizons since i have seen your work mr.
JINJU. I love your work sir.
    ben

  135. By ongoing I didn’t mean it had to be consistant. I was thinking more along the lines of a long term greater story that keeps you coming back to the states to study it. Have a safe trip home I look forward to seeing your final edit.

  136. Rafal Pruszynski

    David,

    my e-mail is jinjuralph@gmail.com

I have still been shooting but mostly struggling with a sequence. As I told you before, I wanted to get 35 images after a year of shooting, and I worked hard to try and edit down to a tight edit, and it happened to end up at 36. Send me an e-mail and Ill respond with a url to the tight edit and the looser edit (35 vs 80 or so images) and maybe you could give me your feeling about the result.

  137. i think it would be useful to have a login system for the comments on this blog, that only allows a single use of a username. this would prevent confusion and impostors seeking to cause friction.

  138. Rafal Pruszynski

Yes, Ben I agree. I think it could be rather simple to do. Taking an example from Too Much Chocolate (a blog) where you have to provide some information about yourself before you are allowed to participate in the discussions. I think that providing your real name, an e-mail address and a link to your work could be required. Atleast then you could cut down a lot on these anonymous impostors posing as others or simply posting anonymously. Its a thought to consider after some of what I saw under the previous essays. Anonymity is for cowards.

  139. I feel the need to go off topic again…[note the clever use of ellipsis there; if DAH can ellipsize here, so can I. I’ll even throw in a good neologism while I’m at it…

David Axelrod misspoke. That is what the former junior Senator from Illinois’ transition team says about Mr. Axelrod’s statement that the transition team discussed who the next junior Senator from Illinois would be with the soon to be former Governor of Illinois and they are sticking to that position come hell or new revelations. Five will get you ten, of course, that Mr. Axelrod didn’t know he was misspeaking when he made the statement in the first place—he was simply answering a reporter’s question at the time—but events have overtaken Mr. Axelrod and his response. Events are like that.

Politicians misspeak a lot these days, so much so that you’d think that misspeaking is all the rage in the nation’s capital, the way the Hula-Hoop or the Pet Rock once were. Misspeaking is not exactly the same as lying, of course; lying has that ugly air of purpose about it, an air that might lead your average voter to conclude that his local solon was deliberately trying to deceive him. Lying is cold and hard, while misspeaking is as soft and fuzzy as a teddy bear and much more open to positive interpretation.

Misspeaking is, in its essentials, much more like using the passive voice. Most students don’t learn much about the passive voice in school today, which is understandable once you remember that public education in this our Great Republic is a governmental responsibility and what government wants to answer inconvenient questions from the citizenry? None that I know of, and if you don’t teach the kids about the passive voice in the first place, they’ll never know when you’re using it when these same kids grow up and have to cough up their hard-earned tax dollars to pay the Big Three automakers to lose money. Now just in case you haven’t heard yet, the passive voice occurs in a sentence where the subject is the object of the verb, as in the gun was left in the car, but not the cannolis. You’ll notice that you don’t know who left the gun in the car and if you’re smart you won’t ask, and this is the reason politicians and civil service types love the passive voice. It is easier, much easier, for a politician to say that errors were made in the implementation of this policy than it is for the pol to get up and say, I screwed up big time here, folks, I’m sorry. People who screw up lose their bids for re-election; errors made in the implementation of a policy are the gremlins’ fault, when it isn’t the fault of the international Communist conspiracy.

The problem politicians have with the passive voice is that there are still enough people who recognize the beast when the pols trot it out to explain their latest disaster. What our lawmakers really need in cases like this is a way to lie through their teeth without looking actually looking like they’re lying. And thus we come to the ever-growing popularity of misspeaking.

What gives misspeaking its peculiar power is that the listener knows the pol is lying—he is, after all, a politician, and politicians lie when they inhale and when they exhale, when they eat and when they excrete, when they…well, you get the point—but the listener can’t tell just how this guy is jerking them around. A misspeak, beyond being something all pilots want to do, could be a flat-out lie or a simple mistake or a statement someone made without knowing there was a wiretap in the room or even just someone’s half-baked opinion and not at all the official policy of the government of the United States, no matter how many times you read it in the New York Times, which, just as an aside, likes to use the passive voice to plant unannounced editorials in the middle of its news coverage. Just thought I’d stick that in so you’d know what those guys are up to. Now, if you could combine the passive voice with a really good misspeak, the Air Force could accidentally set off a nuke in downtown Denver and then say that the Broncos were responsible for the disaster.

Given the immense popularity of misspeaking amongst politicians, it’s only a matter of time before misspeaking catches on with the public at large. Taxpayers could misspeak on their tax returns, husbands could misspeak about cheating on their wives, and their kids could misspeak about their grades, i.e. Mom, I misspoke when I said I was getting a B in math this semester. Misspeaking could get big, really big, I think, the kind of big that gets its own reality show, unless, that is, you already count C-Span as that reality show. They could change the format around though, and bring in better looking people; the ugly old clowns they’ve got in there now are just so miscast it’s not funny. I mean, really, Nancy Pelosi? Whose idea was that, for crying out loud? Isn’t Paris Hilton available these days?

Yes, I see a tremendous fortune in misspeaking. The opportunities in misspeaking on Wall Street are just too rich to think about and, better yet, the Democrats are returning to the White House. Republicans don’t misspeak as well as Democrats, for reasons that defy explication, although the media holding the Republicans to a different rhetorical and grammatical standard than Democrats might have something to do with it. Lyndon Johnson misspoke so often he opened a credibility gap several miles wide in Pennsylvania Avenue and Bill Clinton misspoke so often he couldn’t keep track of all his misspeaks and so ended up parsing the word is in public. Jimmy Carter tried to misspeak, but he wasn’t convincing as a misspeaker and had to rely on being wishy-washy instead.

Ronald Reagan was the only good Republican misspeaker in recent years, primarily because he’d convinced himself that he wasn’t misspeaking at all; the Bushes, both 41 and 43, weren’t and aren’t very good at it; there’s just something about misspeaking that offends the old New England Puritan spirit, I think; and Richard Nixon was positively horrible at it. Whenever Ron Ziegler, Nixon’s press secretary, needed to misspeak he’d say his previous statements were inoperative, which only made Nixon sound guilty as hell. That he was guilty as hell is not the point here; the entire point of misspeaking is that you never sound like you’re not telling the God’s honest truth as you know it right at this instant. And if it isn’t the God’s honest truth, well, you just misspoke, that’s all. No harm in that, is there?

  140. akaky-dad: u da man!…:)))

DAVID:…MAYBE by end of January (once we get all kinks worked out and you move to your new Castle by the Surf ;)) ), we can start literary contributions too….i cant wait to read a post-inaugural jam by Dad-Akaky….

    running
    hugs
    bob

  141. Okay, I don’t want to sound like the grammar scold here, but under Upcoming Events Burn magazine promises the following:

“Events of interest to readers here will soon be posted…”

As an English sentence, the above is clumsier than a toddler two minutes after he takes his first toke off the hash pipe. First, “events of interest to readers here?” As opposed to announcing events of interest to readers on the Aryan Nations website?

“Events of interest to our readers will be posted here soon.” [in the passive voice, but that’s okay in this case]
“Events of interest to readers will soon be posted here”
“We will be posting information about events of interest to readers here soon.”

Any of these will work better than the ungainly construction that’s there now. Now that I have thoroughly destroyed everyone’s good modd with this nitpicking, I will go eat a cookie.

  142. You can’t wait to read such a thing? I can’t see why, really; after 1/20 we’re all going to be in the same post-inaugural jam together and wondering how to get out of it.

  143. And I should learn to proofread before hitting the submit button. Modd is, of course, a typo for mood, just as discrete and discreet sound the same but don’t mean the same thing. The latter has nothing whatsoever to do with the subject of either this or my previous post, but I felt the need to share and so I have. You are not, however, getting any cookies.

  144. observations on burn.

well.. i think generally it’s going really well.. i love the increased number of people commenting.. the new photography and frequentcy of it, to which i will contribute.. and the new bias the chatter is taking towards a less sycophantic direction.

i hate the word BUT, but..

the name stealing is really getting to be crap.. and i don’t think it needs a subscription service to beat it.. i think there are indications as to who is responsible and i think someone here knows who is up to it.. so stop it.. stop it yourself, if it is you, or stop it yourself, if you know the perpetrator.

as i read it above – it’s through flickr.. so.. it seems ben is the agent provoker and representative from the dubiously named HCSP group on flickr.. so.. ben.. what can be done to sort it out without spoiling the general air or tolerance and respect so many have worked hard to build here?..

  145. ALL,
i dont know what u guys think at this point… but this “BURN” shit is getting “bigger & bigger” every single day… its been 2 days now that im trying to keep up with all the comments ( from Katharina’s photo page also … damn Kat, and i thought i was stirring the pot… yeah right… )
    laughing…
thank u all asking questions & stuff, i try to catch up with every tiny question… i feel bad ignoring anyone that had the kindness to watch my VENICE slideshow… please watch it again,
but please get thew latest ( free ) firefox version because friends informed me that the music stops in the middle of the song in some earlier versions of Safari…. sorry about that….
Again, i cant believe all the FEEDBACK ( my email is full also.. )
    I’m so flattered … i feel like a little girl…
    i wanna cry… Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
ok… enough… of me … going back to my bubble….

  146. DAVID BOWEN…

i am with you my friend….please remember we are still only 6 days old….so, surely we have a few little “bumps”….as you well know, i am basically against any kind of censorship , but maybe my web naivete´ will lose out to some form of reasonable practicality…i always assume the best of people..i have also been burned because of this..i remember once having a sort of “open door” policy to a party in my college apartment once, only to have my camera stolen, the windows broken etc etc…so, i will remain just as open as i can possibly be and yet keep my old friends like you around…dissent yes, civility yes….

please please send me some work amigo…i know your work and would like to have some of it here…i think we have a chance on our BURN to change the game…instead of complaining about the state of affairs, let’s re-invent the state of affairs…get ourselves out shooting and having our work appear the way we want and with a bit of constructive critique from those with a discerning eye and provocative wit and intelligence…

wishing you a very Happy New Year with your new family…all health and happiness…the photos can come later…

    cheers, david

  147. AKAKY…

my clumsy mistake (will fix it now if i can remember how)…hey my friend, i keep telling you that YOU are THE wordsmith of BURN…well, yes, Bob Black gives you a run for sure, sometimes Sidney, Tom Hyde and ???..

thank goodness my mother does not see my online preparations…she was an English teacher and i cannot even to this day get through dinner without being corrected on one thing or another…why do you think i picked up a camera???

    Happy New Year amigo…

    cheers, david

  148. Hey David

Let me know by email when you may have some time to chat. I have a few BURN observations and an idea for a project I would like to bounce off of you. Or just give me a call if you still have my number.

If I do not speak to you before… Happy New Year.

  149. no Hyde, you are THE WALRUS ;)))))))))))))…and im the EGGMAN! ;))))))

yea, but akaky is the real Parrot-dentist, now fucking doubt!

    hugs, running

  150. Andrew, I am fairly certain that ellipsize is a neologism, although I could be wrong about that. If I am, well, I misspoke again, didnt I?

  151. “Events of interest to readers here will soon be posted”

Dad-Akaky, ;))))))….that sentence clumsy???…what about your variant: “We will be posting information about events of interest to readers here soon”…since when did future continuous ever come across as agile for an unspecified act? ;)))))…and, moreover, it mimic’s the passive voice, that makes it even peculiarly clumsy (see, they hammered all these finer aspects (and voice) into me behind the deli counter in cleveland, you know, the place u dumped off me and Lisa)….now, though i am a writer, my sentences have never been known for their grammatical finesse (i was saved from catholic nun english teachers when u dropped us off in cleveland), so i do not wish to press too keenly this issue of syntax, particularly since Burn’s grammatical morphology is left in tack (which is more important dad?)….

so, i’ll offer a simpler variation:

    “Coming Soon: future events.”

Now, i know you are stunned, ’cause brevity nor precision has ever been a finer part of my prose’ stitching, but I seek to amend that this beloved new 2009.

    I hope u approve :))))

    hugs
    bob

ps. Akaky, will you know give me a ginger snap to go with my Mamosa

  152. “behind the deli counter in cleveland, you know, the place u dumped off me and Lisa)…”

jesus, is that ever an ugly sentence….ok, a revision:

behind the deli counter in cleveland, you know, the place at which u dumped off me and Lisa…

  153. You know, I should have stayed in that deli for a little while longer than I did and made sure that they were not pulling my leg about that whole kielbasa thing. Still, simpler is better and yours works better than mine.

  154. but dad, as i’ve said before, i do not begrudge (a word whose etymology is an elips’d variation of the passive voice construction, see what mamosa’s bring out) your act of drive-by deli drop off….it made me the mad lunatic i am (and u cant imagine how many 19th century russian novels i got to read behind that counter, i mean who the hell appreciates a good deli in cleveland anyway, so, business was slow but my education swift and deep)…so….well see what David things ;)))…some how the original sentence looks cozy here at burn….all messy and pulpy inside ;))))

    hugs dad
    your son

    bob

ps. marina and i were talking: when we come to ny again, i’d like to give u a gift (russian lit), but maybe that will wait to summer….time we re-united :))

  155. ps. i can give u a walking tour of William Kennedy’s albany, if u live near there….running, ur son…b ps. now re-reading Besy (demons) u gotta re-read dostoevsky in the new translation…by the way your namesake, gogol too…these 2 are saints:

    richard pevear and larissa volokhonsky

their gogol is brilliant…wait until u read this new version of Overcoat….(unless, u madman, read it po-russkie)

  156. behind the deli counter in cleveland, you know, the place where you dumped Lisa and me.

    but that’s just my opinion

  157. Mr. Harvey,

thank you for the kind words about being the wordsmith here, but I think Bob rates that and not me, as his contributions usually have something to do with photography and its underlying philosophy and mine do not. Happy New Year.

PS. Am I wrong in assuming that being THE wordsmith at a photography site is an honor roughly akin to being the deli manager at a vegetarian supermarket?

  158. hi david bowen

i just found this comment. kind of offensive. last time i checked i was posting without hiding my identity. i contribute to discussions on flickr and burn without hiding my identity.

i don’t have the time, energy or inclination to encourage people to “troll”.

i think you should calm down a bit and stop finger pointing/making up conspiracy theories. perhaps take yourself a little less seriously, and maybe go take some photographs?

    regards,

    Ben

  159. Wojtek Jakubiec

i am geting hooked on this site. I am not even joking…
I have seen road trips and I gotta admit it was and is still inspiring.
Specially the way it’s presented, a slide show + the media part with the music.
An essay becomes 200 times more interesting like that.

  160. hey ben.. i simply mean´t that through the flickr group you may have known who was making up the names.. finger pointing at you was not intended.

quite calm, always busy taking photos and you know.. taking no bait

The Erinyes (Ἐρινύες, pl. of Ἐρίνυς Erinys; lit. “the angry ones”) or Eumenides (Εὐμενίδες, pl. of Εὐμενής; lit. “the gracious ones”).

    from Wikipedia

“n Greek mythology the Erinyes (Ἐρινύες, pl. of Ἐρίνυς Erinys; lit. “the angry ones”) or Eumenides (Εὐμενίδες, pl. of Εὐμενής; lit. “the gracious ones”) or Furies in Roman mythology were female, chthonic deities of vengeance or supernatural personifications of the anger of the dead. They represent regeneration and the potency of creation, which both consumes and empowers. A formulaic oath in the Iliad (iii.278ff; xix.260ff) invokes them as “those who beneath the earth punish whoever has sworn a false oath.” Burkert suggests they are “an embodiment of the act of self-cursing contained in the oath”.[1]

When the Titan Cronos castrated his father Uranus and threw his genitalia into the sea, the Erinyes emerged from the drops of blood, while Aphrodite was born from the seafoam. According to a variant account, they issued from an even more primordial level—from Nyx, “Night”. Their number is usually left indeterminate. Virgil, probably working from an Alexandrian source, recognized three: Alecto (“unceasing,” who appeared in Virgil’s Aeneid), Megaera (“grudging”), and Tisiphone (“avenging murder”). Dante followed Virgil in depicting the same three-charactered triptych of Erinyes. The heads of the Erinyes were wreathed with serpents (compare Gorgon) and their eyes dripped with blood, rendering their appearance rather horrific. Sometimes they had the wings of a bat or bird and the body of a dog.”

AMAZING POSTS…:)))) YOU WOA !! me this time…I hope your essay will do the same…:o)

“We all find occasion to reject and resist another person. We all like to put up a fight against anything we dislike on the evening news as we spectate the world. But we forget that when we decide we will resist something or somebody, either mentally or physically, we only empower the object of our resistance, either in reality or in our own minds. If you want to enjoy the ability to influence, always start with acceptance. If you want to disarm another begin with acceptance. If you want to encourage and empower another to change, start with acceptance. Don’t make it conditional. Otherwise it’s just resistance disguised as acceptance, and you are still trying to control them. And we can all smell a controller…can’t you?”

i guess i will have an essay to go up in a month or so..
the mentoring is really about the book for me – and the essay here will be 1/4 the total photos only.. the book needs to help me get where i hope to go.. where my dreams take me when i´m asleep..

always very mundane dreams really.. achievable.. real..
okay just thinking aloud – putting off the inevitable of diving back into negative archives, which once i get stuck into will take me over for hours..

bye-bye world and thanks for all the fish.

CivilianCivilianCivilian, manning your corner, scuffing your toe in the dirt, tossing down Ouzo, wiping your mouth with the back of your hand, peering into the dark looking for the lights of a familiar car to come zig-zagging down the lane, blond spirals whipping out the window and her wave, her wink as she grinds to a halt at the curb..and you grin, wipe the toe of your dusty shoe on the back of your jeans..you saunter up, lean casually against the car and lean down..hey babe..hey…

so you’s guys..just passing by to say hi..to you and the gracious poet in the car, tugging a blond curl and leaning down to whisper..

    ‘night gracie…zzzzzz, night Civilian…zzzzzz…

    Insomnia. Homer. Taut sails.
I’ve read through half the list of ships:
This spun-out brood, this train of cranes
    That once ascended over Hellas.

A wedge of cranes to foreign shores,-

Where are you sailing? Were it not for Helen,
Achaeans, what would Troy have been to you?

The sea and Homer – love moves all.
Where should I turn? Here Homer is silent,
While the Black Sea clamors oratorically
And reaches my pillow with a heavy roar.

    GRACIE …I am in tears…

I have been diagnosed as VISUAL-SPATIAL LEARNER. VSL’s are individuals who think in pictures rather than in words. They have a different brain organization than auditory-sequential learners. The visual-spatial learner model is based on the newest discoveries in brain research about the different functions of the hemispheres. The left hemisphere is sequential, analytical, and time-oriented. The right hemisphere perceives the whole, synthesizes, and apprehends movement in space. They learn better visually than auditorally…They are often gifted creatively, technologically, mathematically or emotionally. They also are very creative, dramatic, artistic and musical.n adulthood, these individuals excel in fields dependent upon their spatial abilities: art, architecture, physics, aeronautics, pure mathematical research, engineering, computer programming, and PHOTOGRAPHY.

I bet my big bottle of ouzo that 87% of the Philosophers here are Visual Spatial.
That’s why I am writing here and that’s why I am quoting so much.

    Please procede for your roles:

    Hi B-b-b-b-b-bob-B-b-b-b-lack!

Civilian…horchata with vodka, eh? Down here they make horchata, sell it at the market in old wooden bins, next to the turmeric powder..i love drinking it fast before it has time to settle its heaviness in the bottom of the glass.

Gracie..don’t look for gum, look for a coded message honey-chile.

Gracie and Civilian..i love the sound of your words. Like tinkly music that seriously heals what seriously ails me. i can’t explain it..no meanings, just sounds, absolute internet night song..like crickets and frogs and birds that feed by moonlight..i don’t need to understand their meaning either, i am just happy that the night air is made sweeter, thicker somehow by their voices.

To all three poets Bob, Gracie and Civilian..you grace the pages of Burn magazine with your charm and subtle song.

    your friend
    kathleen

    civilian,

    not a total misquote:
I sing song — and feed on crickets and frogs and birds in the moonlight
jumping on a building, attracting suitor, feeling either feeling
    with horchata or vodka
    YAMAS!!
