BURN01_list

burnMagazine

the pitch: to the point..BURN.01 is available for online purchase as of now…yes, i am selling this new book and proud of it…the best work of the audience here on Burn is featured along with a smattering of iconic legends….25 photo essays by both legends and emerging photographers alike… and two thought provoking  text pieces…..above, holding copies of the 300 page, printed in Italy, collector edition (1000 copies) are my students from the loft workshop which i do every year right here…frankly, a typical class for me and my Burn demographic….the best of times for all…the photographers above will present their work on Friday evening right after the Bruce Davidson show right here in my apartment…see announcement below..

the are two choices below for payment…editions are the same…we just are trying to keep the shipping costs to you as low as possible in the same way we priced out the production quality and sales price…this is a good deal..no businessmen among us..

even though BURN 01 is not inexpensive, it is the very best we could do,  and even at this price the only way we could do this special edition was with support from a few individual donors here, who prefer to remain anonymous….the donors here go un-named but they have been dream donors….zero requests…..they like Burn as it is and fund for that reason….and one of the most generous donors is from the readership here, whom i have never even met, nor Anton…no questions, no interview….

so both Anton and i are very proud of our businesses relationship between you and us….hell, everybody works for free…Anton Kusters, Haik Mesropian, Anna Barry Jester, Diego Orlando, Mike Courvoisier, Kerry Payne, Michelle Smith, Germana Lavagna, …hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of theoretically salaried work…no joke….these are smart folks….so i gotta pay em……eventually…sooner rather than later…and , oh yes, do not forget we pay the photographers who are published on Burn…..

so please, if you feel anything about Burn at all, sponsor this book and help us out in whatever way you can..damn, this has been a ride from the beginning ..right? anybody who knows Burn from the outside/inside knows that we are an open book…….our crew worked hard…Anton on design of course, Diego rode the presses watching over every detail, Anna did all the research etc…everybody did their bit

here is my belief:

i think YOU will make BURN 01  a classic just by buying it….1000 copies in the first edition…so, c’mon help revolutionize the biz just by buying BURN 01…think about it….rightfully and respectfully honors the icons, but mostly celebrates the young leading edge photographers of tomorrow…who can argue with that one?

i do hope to see some of you, but not all of you, at the Davidson/student/Burn 01 launch (see below)…i will give you the show of shows….but then again, i will bet you already know that….

  1. Just a quick note actually, 65 euro for a book may seem a lot, but I truly see this as the future for our industry. We need to look at alternatives and work with our patrons, which in many ways the donors are. Its a return to a very old way of working, people who appreciate work, will pay for it, but are not in it for profit. Non-Profit photojournalism, photographers earning a working wage through the generosity of others.

And at the end of the day while my money may go towards another photographer this month/week/year maybe next year/week/month I will be on the other side.

Its a two way street and I hope we can all meet somewhere in the middle for a nice cup of coffee, a chat and some amazing photos.

Looking forward to getting my copy!

  2. Burn 01 heading way down south !

Would love to be on that roof top at the end of the week
It looks like a great place for a beer….

The fact that it cost more to ship the book than it does
to buy the book show why we need more revolution !

Looking forward to my own roof top party when it arrives.

  3. The book is beautiful, both in production quality and content. Congratulations to all the fine folk who produced it and all the wonderful photographers and writers who were appear in it. Fantastic work all around.

  4. Very much looking forward to leafing through some Hi-Caliber photography in Hi-Gloss! Well done Burnians…..Burn On!

Some day I will break free of the West, set foot in New York city and join the party…until then tip one back for the rest of us!

    Cheers, Jeremy

  5. Ordered my copy, can’t wait to see it. I sincerely wish I could be there this friday, but it is unlikely…too many calendar commitments…

Many hugs and warm wishes and good karma to all who can make it, though….and to those, like me, who wish they could…

  6. I have been lucky to see the “dummy” at Lookbetween in June. Great stuff! Congratulations to all and thanks for the so so hard work to make it possible.

I just ordered my copy – straight from Italy, I guess. DAH, you might want to check on the backend of e-junkie, because the money has been charged from my card, but it is not being claimed from your side. So the whole procedure is pending … and pending … and I want my book! :)

Congrats again! Great stuff! Who would have thought this while we were riding RoadTrips two(+) years ago?!

Good night BURNworld. Time for bed here in Germany.

  7. Yea! Just purchased it. Can’t wait. Hope it is waiting for me when I return home at the end of the month. I am sure it will be a kick ass show too David.

  8. as to the fiesta….well, marina’s giving a talk on friday, so i’ll be home celebrating via skype and wine…if you want :)))

David, Anton, thanks for being/doing burn. It is the highlight of my day.

  11. actually I was going to spend the beer money, that would have gone to the gambling habit, that would have gone to pay the mortgage, but oh, well.

  12. I look (am) too fat in that photo.. and bandana is gone with the wind…:)
    damn!!!!

  13. I just started reading this superb blog, and I also just started getting into Bruce Davidson’s fantastic body of work.

I’m not sure how this event works, but I’d love to attend! Will Burn copies be available at the event for purchase?

    What should I bring? =)

  14. Picking up my copy directly in Venice.. have a blast y’all on Friday, and thanks for not just having an idea, but making it the real thing!

  15. Jamie Maxtone-Graham

Any online preview of ‘burn 01’? It would be fantastic to get a little taste.

I am jealous of all those able to get to 475 Kent on Friday……

    THANK YOU ALLL…

    SPEECHLESS

  17. Wow! What a revelation the group photo above is – these are all truly young people. They even look innocent!

    Except for Panos, of course.

Placed my order. I was a little shocked when the shipping and handling fee got added in, then a little relieved when I discovered I had enough cash in my paypal account that I only had to fork up $17.98 fresh.

Can’t wait to receive the book. Maybe I will wait to read it until the first really cold night settles in.

I think it will be more enjoyable that way.

With any luck, that could happen by the time the books arrives.

    FROSTFROG…
it’s the first time that I am really happy to pay …shipping and taxes…:)))

    What not to LOVE !!!

  19. Imants I hear you on postage – I think it’s what the septics call ” Taking one for the team! ”
Ouch but probably worth it – just choking on that final price…yes , got it!

  20. You can thank the lovely and oh so talented sweetdistin for bringing me here via her twitter stream. I wonder if I’ve had my head in a cupboard for the last two years to miss all this going on, but I’m thrilled to have got here just in time for your first foray to physical book. Congratulations – happy to purchase something educational, informative, inspirational and beautiful. I’ve hit the ‘send money’ button, looking forward to the arrival of BURN01 but most of all, I’m delighted to have found you just in the nick of time!

  21. hmmmm..what if i visit the loft after midnight…everyone asleep…i still got the keys after all….
yep…problem solved…taking the greyhound to brooklyn tomorrow…it will take me 7 days to get there..max..doable….ha ha..best idea ive ever had

  22. Hi Trapac :)
    Nice to see you here!

Just ordered my copy (though the payment part is stuttering somewhat?).
    SO EXCITED!!!
And thanks to all the hard work from those who have given so much time and energy to putting it together.
    Cannot wait.

  23. bah, I land in NYC on the 23rd! but I’m out in vermont on the 24th till 27th before heading back to manhattan!

Any chance of being able to pick a book up and avoiding all them nasty shipping charges?

  24. A good atmosphere you have there in New York… Although I am a solitary person and world observer, I would very much like to join at least one of David’s camera club meetings in that famous Kibbutz loft… but I guess in order to qualify I would have to have a big 2.8 zoom lens, or at least leica m9???:)… or a ground shaking portfolio, or recommendations from Magnum or VII members… anyway, if everything moves pretty much like expected I should show up in New York in the middle or end of October… then I will try to contact that famous guy David Alan Harvey… Cheers

    SPREAD THE news
BURN 01 is here to stay…we have been warned…

  31. David/anton/burnians/all:

    just a brief message…

it is a wonderous moment, at last…for most of you Burn is a relatively new home/place to crash/delerium in your lives…but i want to take a moment, very brief, to shine a light on what this moment means…

i remember when david first began his blog (learned about it from bruno stevens) focused primarily on his students and david alan harvey musings :))…that evolved into Road Trips as a living/breathing/vital home…but more than a home..a place where people talked and also MADE work…the first Road Trip assignment…which generated real work…some of that work was shown at Look3, long before there was burn and Burn was the natural extension of road trips, the inevitable growth…but it’s always been about photography and photography…giving helping achieving stimulating sharing, etc…

and burn has been an amazing, crazy, hectic place…shit, i even went a bit crazy a few times ;))))…hopefully few remember my long, bombastic ‘editorial notes’ when i was helping as editor-at-large…and thank goodness, david and anton had enough faith, to let me disappear and recoup my insanity to help Burn in the best way i can: to make photos and to write supportive and hopefully helpful comments…no more ‘editor notes’ from me, ever ;))…

so, i want to celebrate david and anton and mike c and kerry and anna and haik and Diego and and Michelle and Germana and lassal and the guy from ogilvy (always forget his name) and marie and eric and chris b and panos and andrew sn and erica and CIVI all those people who, from that december meeting, and throughout chats and in front of behind the scenes that have continued to make burn the rocking and inspired forward-looking place it is….

a place meant to inspire and, most importantly, HELP photographers…

i feel so happy for all of you and all of us,…as a guy who’d done some behind the scenes and a guy whod’ help in front….I am so proud of all of you…

and so THANKFUL to David and Anton! :))) You guys are amazing! :))))

big big congrats David and Anton and all of you

marina and i are sending everyone big hugs! :))

    can’t wait…to see my copy :)))…signed ;))))

so happy to be early in the buying process, as they’ll sell out quickly :)))
    bob

  32. Lassal, will do, on Monday, IF my car stops to play silly games.. just beeped and told me to stop, which I have done.. waiting for it to tell me GO.. hmmm.. don’t really feel like pushing it through the St. Bernard tunnel.. So looking forward to meet Diego and Burn 01 ;)

  33. If some country is not in the rest of the world postage list, please write me at diego@burnmagazine.org

In Italy BURN_01 is also in some library: MiCamera in Milano and SpazioLabò in Bologna. I will add other places once i have them.

  34. It must be advancing age steadily advancing on me-I think I have socks older than damn near everyone in that workshop group picture (Not, mind you, that you are not all excellent photographers and wonderful human beings who would never do anything as crass as ask me for money like almost any member of my family that I can think of right off the top of my head).

No, I will not be going anywhere on Friday; work beckons on Saturday, which eliminates my doing anything on Friday except go to work and listening to IRL invent reasons for why we can’t go, none of which are necessary because I can’t go, reason or no reason.

$45 is a lot of money for a picture book without any dirty pictures in it. And for the new readers of BURN, yes, that really is Bob Black’s idea of a brief message.

  35. just can’t afford it.
    anyone in/near seattle getting it?
maybe i could look over your shoulder.

    congrats to everyone involved!
    esp. DAH & anton.
    what an enormous accomplishment.
so proud to have been here since Road Trips.
    love you guys..

  36. So happy, so proud !

    Congratulations to all.

I will order books for my friends of korea, too.

    Thank you very much.

    Kyunghee

  37. ~ Always feels good to support the efforts of friends and artists…
Thanx 2 all of you 4 making it happen…

KATIA ~ I may be coming through Seattle on my way to go sailing around the Olympic Peninsula in early October…If I do, I’ll let you know through FB. We could meet up & then you can check out my copy..:)

    Peace, Hillary

  38. GORDON,

I would, but the refund won’t cover the cost of the socks. Akakys don’t hold their value the way a Leica does; we depreciate to just about nothing almost instantly.

  39. just a brief message…
    ———————-

David, pleaaaase, tell me that Bob did not write the preface to BURN01… Pleaaaaase!

    :-))))))))))))))))

  40. Okay, let’s try that again without the strange electrical surge that just ran through this egregious mold pit, shall we?

    ANTHONY RZ,

I suspect the 12-pack in question here is one of beer. I am not sure of this, but I suspect that a week of workshopping brings on a powerful thirst.

  41. Akaky,

I figured out it was about beer:)))… sometimes I like to joke and tease a bit:)… I do not consume beer though:)… but it isn’t relevant…

  42. HERVE! :))))))))))))))000

    well….ummmm….no, i didn’t :)))))…but….:)))))…

i did write a long prose-poem about memory/phtoography/snapping pictures…so, yea, it’s long too ;)))…but please feel free to go directly to the photographs, and i will not be offended….part of the work has been nominated for a writing award, which i submitted, after i wrote the piece for David/Anton……and i didn’t contribute any equally long photographic essays….maybe only a picture or two ;))…

so, you are now obligated to wade through the piece i wrote….it’s about the NOW ;))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

    running
    hugs
    b

  43. HERVE, Bob’s being modest. His essay is so long, I hear the only pictures actually in Burn 01 are two pictures of Audrey’s parents and one of Lance being stopped at a rodeo for photographing a horse.

  44. AKAKY! :)))))))))))))))))))))

DO NOT GIVE AWAY SECRETS ;))

1000 editions have to be sold…who is going to buy anything with a 300 page poem from me + 2 pics…..actually my essay is 4 words long :)))

    ok, back to work :)))

  45. HERVE :)

think of it as a 10-day meditation treat….and think how much cooler the photos will look after saying, god i got through that Black’s thing….beside, i’m plowing my way through Proust…the least you can do is read my poem ;)))

    hugs
    b

  46. the least you can do is read my poem ;)))
    ————————————–
at 56$, I will read everything in the book, Bob, rest assured! :-)))

Proust: while in france, i borrowed and downloaded from the local library a huge CD collection of readings (by Lambert Wilson) of “a la recherche…” for the long bus trips and off days, in Asia. A lot lighter than taking the book along!

  47. bjarte – how the exhibition launch go?
well done my friend.. and i like the happiness post.

apparently diego says he can post to norway for 25 euro..
i’ll see if it is cheaper to send 2 at once.

    as an aside – diego..
got your email more than 30 times..
you may be leaning on the ‘send’ button on your phone or something :o)
    d

  48. One should really use the camera as though tomorrow you’d be stricken blind. (Dorothea Lange)

    bjarte..

and then, the only honest photographer is a blind one.

  49. David

I’m going to Sweden in october anyways, so you will only have to pay for shipping from here (Ålgård) to Bergen. I think it will be cheaper for you than from Italy to Bergen :)

  50. BOB and DAH:

    Bob agree with you:

What about this vision of burn in the very close next future: (laughing :-P)

Burn is growing so fast. A baby that two years ago came to this cyber world, put his head out and started sharing about photography, about art, about thoughts and photographers phyloshophy.
I can’t even think about “burn” three years from now… maybe an agency, maybe a big community with headquarters in downtown Manhattan, Paris and Shangai. DAH doing meetings here and there hiring more and more photographers, exhibitions sponsored by great print labs and finally being at the Wall Street stock market!! Uhmm, no the last part is too much

David that sounds cool… or maybe to much stress…yes, I know, living in front of your porch in NC is also great.

Enjoy this week with students and like The Beatles said “let burn be” or “All you need is burn”

    Patricio

  51. Anthony –

    “I don’t know what that 12 pack means though… ”

It means that you had better be lifting weights, because you will be required to enter wearing no shirt, with your chest and abs exposed and you had better be ripped – a six pack just isn’t good enough.

    katia –

It’s been awhile, but Seattle is one of those towns that sooner or later I always get back to. If it should next happen before – or even after – you get your hands on burn 01, I will bring mine and would love to sit down and go through it with you – and to look at more of your work, which I so greatly respect and admire.

  52. DAVID BOWEN,
I saw Diego’s phone in Perpignan and I can imagine why his send button is not working. All the top glass was broken and I think you can use it just with a lot of imagination (or memory).

Diego, We wait also for BURN.01 presentation in Rome and… PARIS?

  53. I am so bummed that I can’t make it to this…I miss all of you guys and need to reconvene with everyone soon. I’d be happy to meet up with fellow BuRNians in any way…a gathering, a show, a photo festival, or a workshop. Photography is LIFE and the stART of the creativity living in my heART :)

Have a fabulous time at the show, everyone. Hugs.

  54. Before you read the attached, my apologies if you are a vegan. I do not wish to offend, which is a dumb thing to say, considering that if I did not wish to offend, I would have said nothing. But be that as it may…

Now I would prefer not to point fingers here, but there’s a great, yes, even an abyssal, a word I am using here for the first time, even though it’s the wrong word to use here, given that I will not be talking about a credibility gap as I originally planned to, but something else entirely, but I like abyssal, so it stays in; I like it because it is both short and polysyllabic, unlike polysyllabic, which is not short, but is definitely polysyllabic in the best sense of the word; (end of digression; thank you for your patience. If you have lost your place, something that is always possible, given the length of these digressions, please start from the last word in this digression from the digression. Ready? Okay, here we go…even a tremendous) double standard at work in American public life. We do not choose to recognize this double standard for fear it will ask us for money or the use of the family car on Saturday night, but whether we recognize it or not, the double standard is there, when it is not next door annoying the neighbors’ dog. On the one hand, society castigates athletes roundly for their use of steroids, and rightfully so, I think; the habitual use of performance enhancing substances compels the average sports fan to wonder if what they are watching at sports venues and on their television sets is the result of training, hard work, and the human desire to excel, or the entirely predictable outcome of ingesting this year’s line of new and improved pharmaceuticals.

The abuse of steroids and other such drugs calls into question the validity of every sports record broken over the past few years, for when one wishes to debate whether Babe Ruth or Barry Bonds was the better home run hitter, Ruth’s supporters can point out that he achieved his record without any help from his pharmacist, unless you include bartenders, hot dog vendors, bookies, tarts, trollops, harlots and strumpets as falling under the rubric of pharmacist; it’s a mental leap, to be sure, and there’s no small amount of cognitive dissonance involved, but you can always scrape the dissonance off your shoes on the welcome mat outside before you come in and track it all over the carpet. And yes, I know about Hank Aaron hitting more home runs than Babe Ruth; I was in the bathroom when Aaron hit number 715; but Aaron’s always lived a clean, upstanding sort of life devoid of drugs, drinking, and the usual causes of scandal, with plenty of exercise and good nutrition, and if I used him as an example then I couldn’t use the words strumpet and trollop in this sentence, as the underlying concept behind those words was more or less obsolete by the time Aaron hit his last home run back in the 1970’s, and I was looking forward to working them in somewhere before the end of this sentence of three to six months in the county jail.

That Major League Baseball, among other professional sports, is finally doing something to restore some credibility to the playing field is belated, to be sure, but welcome nonetheless. This new determination to do something about artificial enhancement in professional sports stands in direct contrast with the widespread attitude of ‘everyone does it so it must be okay’ one finds everywhere in agriculture. There is not a category of fruit and vegetable anywhere in the country that growers, often with the connivance of major agribusiness and chemical companies, have not enhanced using chemicals that would get any athlete caught using them banned from their sport immediately, if not kill them outright. Yet these very same chemical companies routinely boast in television commercials on public television, among other places, which is supposed to be commercial free, but isn’t, not by a long shot, about how their product will turn any plant from arugula to zucchini into a full-blown, oversized, record-breaking, pistil-packing behemoth of botany.

This laissez-faire attitude towards chemical enhancement raises all manner of disturbing questions about modern American society, if you think about it too much, and trust me, I have. How can the nation’s youth, the future movers and shakers and insurance executives trying to get out of paying off the policies on all that moving and shaking, acquire a decent respect for the principles of fair play and good sportsmanship when 4-H clubs throughout the land encourage the youngsters in their charge to use artificial means to bolster plant growth in order to win blue ribbons? As Napoleon once pointed out, some people will do amazing things just to get a piece of ribbon, but should we in our modern age encourage unethical behavior simply because a short faux Frenchman thought it was a good idea two centuries ago? And this casual attitude towards chemical, and now genetic, alteration of plants bespeaks a dark and disturbing undertone in out attitudes towards plant life in general.

We scream foul when a ballplayer uses a steroid or when someone dopes a racehorse, yet no one says anything about the horrors routinely inflicted upon plants. Even the average vegan, one of a group who should take an ethical stand against the abuse of plants, will shout vigorously against genetically modified food and then go straight home and eat organic spinach for supper. The vegan so caught out will proclaim the organic nature of his spinach, but the spinach’s background makes no difference here; organic or not, it is still sacrificed on the altar of human need, often with oil and vinegar or some organic ranch dressing, if there is such a thing. The spinach does not care why the vegan eats it; the vegan’s motivation for eating the spinach is not the point here; the spinach, in its death throes, knows only that the vegan is eating it, and so it perishes in the same state of atavistic horror we would feel watching a great white shark devour our best friend, but not our best friend’s annoying little brother; human solidarity stretches only so far. Obviously the care and loving kindness vegans lavish on animals is not extended to fruits and vegetables, which vegans treat with the same utilitarian ruthlessness that the rest of us treat pigs and cattle, although we treat our fellow flesh-eaters without the snotty self-righteousness that marks the vegan’s relationship with others.

There are few groups in American life more smugly annoying than vegans, always excluding the editorial board of the New York Times, of course, who more or less have a lock on the smug market in the northeastern portion of this our Great Republic, and seeing vegans on television always, for me, at any rate, makes me wish I could emulate the woman in the Roald Dahl story who clubs her adulterous husband to death with a frozen leg of lamb and then, after cooking it, serves the evidence to the police officers investigating the husband’s death. If you haven’t ever felt that way then you’re a better person than I am. There’s nothing I can do about vegans except wish they could all perish horribly under a ton of cold cuts, I suppose, but I keep these opinions to myself; we live in a democracy, after all, and even herbivores have rights, as long as they have two legs.

  55. Isn’t that great?
Burn01 publishes Akaky and still nobody know if he is a real person or just an automated Robot!
I’m convinced that Akaky IRL exists.. But Akaky?
Either way, even if it’s a robot.. It’s still a super talented one;)

  56. a civilian-mass audience

    PANOS…AKAKY exists…
    he is like…99…100…yeahhh!!!
    or 999 …1000…yeah…!!!
    6999…7000…wohhh…!!!
    what can we do…???
    BUT
he writes …oh, yeah, he writes…
    he is an academian…like BOBBY,SIDNEY,REIMAR…KATIEEEEE
    and we LOVE them
cause BURN is a combo…like salmon with souvlakia and pasta with chicken soup…

    we are ALL one…BURNING INSDE/OUTSIDE…

    P.S …12pack of …”memories”…hooohooo… :)))
    ok…I am making breakfast…

  59. Just ordered my Burn .01. It may have too much authenticity for Vegas .. let’s just hope the committee doesn’t find out. — But can’t wait for it to arrive

  60. thanks Jim and Panos…

Akaky, you’re kidding about the vegan thing, right? Otherwise why attack those who do their best to live a peaceful, conscientious lifestyle? why here and why now?

  61. Otherwise why attack those who do their best to live a peaceful, conscientious lifestyle? Why here and why now?

A peaceful, conscientious lifestyle to whom? To the plants? I see what you’re saying: only protein need apply for consideration, only protein has rights. All others need not apply, all others exist to serve the protein masters of the universe. To think I would live to see the day when such hateful sentiments could be expressed here at Burn with apparently no remorse shows just how far down the road the moral rot in this country has gone. As to your second question, why not here and why not now? The cause of botanical liberation is too important to be squashed because some feel that plants should simply accept their lsck of rights without protest. It is always thus with oppressors; the oppression they inflict on others they feel is not only justified, but the natural moral order of the universe. Shameful, shameful. O tempora o mores!

  62. Akaky,
U know how much I love u.. U know that my middle name is controversy and u know I value sense of humor
more than god.. Right? You also know that lamb is considered vegetable in Greece right?
Nothing new here.. I was raised to think meat as a necessity on ones diet..
Since I was a little one the general public idea was that without meat u can’t survive …
Childhood scars and beliefs are for the rest of our lives.. Haunt us..
I still struggle with Not adding pastrami in my sandwich..
But today you made it easy for me..
After I read your post my decision was extremely easy..
“Chicken Santa Fe sandwich please…hold the chicken”..
    Thank you..
I can’t preach.. I’m a sinner.. I relapse .. Then dust my self off and try again..
Eating , craving meat is like a heroin addiction.. It’s a struggle..
    But you know what.. ???
Heroin is not a living thing.. It’s not bleeding when u cook it..
It’s not in pain when u smoke it..
Although those two (meat and heroin) they have lots in common.. They both ruin your body..
I’d rather wear a heroin coat than a FUR coat…
    Sad day

  63. And if it’s too early for our society to evolve to a higher standard
( and it is, this earth is relatively
A new born)… I do get it.. But , but..
But , check the above videos and honestly tell me..
Can’t they at least IMPROVE the conditions on those “farms”
    aka CONCENTRATION CAMPS???

And Akaky straight to you and I need an answer on this one..
Why NOT farm raise and eat HUMANS?
    why not???
We are too many , too fat and I suspect we TASTE better..
Why at least not give it a try???

  64. And it’s obvious why we do not eat humans..
Because our level of general consciousness is really really low..
That’s why we “need” religion=Fear of Punishment..
We need Tabboos.. So we keep our crime levels on an “lower” level..
See what we do to animals? Rape them, skin them eat them..
    But it’s ok because animals can’t speak, can’t defend themselves , can’t
    Represent themselves to Any court…

  65. Ok.. Enough .. Back to our regular SALAMI sandwiches..
    1:32pm in LA.. Lunch time..
I know we celebrate BURN01 in this room..
but as in real life.. Breaking news are always part of
    the deal..
Peace everyone and Alaky , big hug and throw that Fur coat away
please.. Keep your salamaki for now but No Fur..
    And that’s a good start:)

  66. Akaky — no hate here,, the concept i think you are posing is indeed interesting…it seems natural (in this world anyway) for things to consume other things… and who’s to say a plant is no less sentient than a cow.. or another human? it’s a good question, and i applaud you for bringing it up… how far does one go to do no harm? where does one draw the line?

Is it enough to live the most conscientiously one can while being as compassionate and respectful to all forms of life as possible? i certainly hope so.

  67. yes plants are living beings…and we all need to eat to survive…im talking about the filthy conditions on those animal farms…Fishing is one thing but the links i posted above is another…

  68. it’s funny (not laughing)

all this talk about vegan and animal farms

i am just glad we all have something to eat.

  69. ALL..

for any of you who are in new york and are planning to see Bruce Davidson and his epic Outside/Inside this evening at the loft, please come as close to 8pm as possible…before 8 and we just will not be ready for you…after 9 and the doors will closed….we just have no other way to work this one…we have to prepare the student slide show, get Bruce set up , and well, this is all right down to the wire in terms of timing etc…and of course we are worried about too many people….the loft is looking very very small at the moment….if the weather holds maybe we set this up on the roof …not sure….in any case, i do look forward to seeing many of you tonight…

    cheers, david

  70. Panos, i admire your empathy, and agree: there are many deplorable and inhumane practices occurring in regard to the way humans treat other life forms. And most humans aren’t even really aware of it, or choose to ignore it… the good news is each and every one of us has the power to make a positive change simply by making informed choices.

have you seen the documentary Earthlings?

  71. Panos: And people will resent you for showing them something they can’t do nothing about, or won’t do nothing about, while uttering “we must do something!”.

  74. Hallo Burn family I’m thoroughly looking forward to attending tonight’s event. My name is John Armah and I run a digital business that allows you to mix multimedia content to make polished videos. I shall be attending with Bridget Nicholls and Heidi Druckmiller.

  75. Friday afternoon of a workshop that really works you. Know all of the participants are way happy they survived the week and have an essay worthy of being shown before such illustrious company. Enjoy the rest of the day and this evening. I’m sure each of you know more about yourselves after going through this week.

Knowing Burn 01 is waiting for me at home makes it easier to leave my vacation. It has been a fruitful trip.

  76. Just had a quick flip through my copy of Burn01: love the variety of photographic approaches it contains. It’s something you easily miss online, where you are more focused on the day-by-day flow; you just miss the long-term significance, how the essays, one after the other, keep on accumulating and gaining a wider meaning. Some of the essays seen on paper have a completely different taste than their online counterpart (as far as I could remember). In particular Erica’s “The Dark Light of this Nothing” was a really refined multimedia presentation, and now in print is a totally different (but wonderful nonetheless) beast…

Moreover, the whole book is a thing of beauty: you can feel how each detail has been evaluated and chosen…

Congratulations to DAH, Anton and to all those who contributed to Burn01. Let’s celebrate tonight! ;)

  77. Please send your congrats to Manjari Sharma. Her Shower Project
has led to an ad campaign. I picked this up in the latest ASMP Bulletin.
    How about that Burnians!!!!

I wonder where the creatives found her?

  78. Everyone have a good time! Wish I could be there!

AKAKY IRL: No, you don’t, you’re an automated robot.

AKAKY: Cool. Does that make me a Cylon?

    AKAKY IRL: Nope.

    AKAKY: That bites.

AKAKY IRL: Sorry. On the other hand, you’re not a Chia pet.

AKAKY: I guess that’s something. Pretty poor pickings, though.

AKAKY IRL: It is what it is, dude.

    AKAKY: Damn.

  79. Congrats to Manjari Sharma for being able to turn her lovely “Shower Project” into paying work! Well deserved!

And speaking of BURN proteges who have been able to cash in after being published here, am I the first person to notice that Andrew Harrington, whose photo of an Amur Leopard was published as a single here on April 25, 2009, is being featured in Canon’s ad campaign “Wildlife As Canon Sees It” with a different leopard photo (although it sure looks like the same leopard) in the ad pages of the October 2010 National Geographic magazine? Congratulations, Harry!

  80. Gordon,

The only ‘link’ is to the BURN archive of ‘Selected Photographs’ for ‘Amur Leopard’ on April 25, 2009.
The Canon ad with Harry’s leopard picture is in the ‘hard copy’ October 2010 issue of National Geographic (“The Spill”), facing page 6.

  81. I went to David’s class finale at the loft last night and the party afterward on the roof. It was fantastic to see the students’ slideshows and how happy and proud they were to present their work in front of such a large star-studded audience after an incredibly intense and demanding week of shooting, critiques, education and fun. The finished work was great and everyone seemed to enjoy the celebration immensely. The students were the stars of the show, and deservedly so. They worked hard for that moment and the results were brilliant.

The warm-up act wasn’t bad either. Bruce Davidson presented three slide trays of photos spanning his entire career, photos that appear in his new book “Outside Inside,” a three volume set containing 800 pics from his archives. In his introductory remarks, David described him as a photographer’s photographer and as one great photograph on the wall succeeded another, and another, and another, there was certainly no denying it. The breadth and depth of his life work is simply amazing. The quality of his photographs is off the charts by any measure. Davidson is clearly a man of great empathy and he must possess a deep and genuine love for humanity. I don’t know, but his work simply radiates human dignity, and that’s true even when he assumes the pov of the vegetation.

The after party on the roof was great as well, as I’m sure you can imagine, which you’ll have to because we’re taking the “what happens in Williamsburg stays in Williamsburg” approach. Suffice it to say that being on that roof with such good company is one of the greatest possible New York experiences. There’s always a fantastic view of the Manhattan skyline and Williamsburg bridge and last night the marginally cool breeze felt like heaven after an hour packed in a small apartment with 100 other people. And there was a full moon as well. What’s not to love?

David was kind enough to invite me in to observe some parts of the workshop. In the coming days I’ll write up a more extensive take on the whole thing, but for now I thought you all would be interested in at least this brief description. I think you’re aware of the workshop’s general flow? Students come up with a project, shoot over the weekend, then participate in daily group critiques and shoot more in the late afternoon/evenings throughout the week. Each morning brings a fresh critique of fresh work and the best photographs, the ones that may appear in the show, are set aside for additional review. David also provides a lot of one-on-one sessions throughout the week and is always available for students, even to the extent of text messaging while a student is on late night shoot. In addition to all that, special guests come by and impart great photo-related wisdom. People like James Estrin of the NYT Lens Blog, Magnum Photographer Chris Anderson. David’s longtime editor at NatGeo Susan Welchman, and others provide the class with hi-end professional points of view and great insights into the way things work in the photo world, as well as an occasional critique or piece of personal advice. And then it’s all topped off with the public slideshow and loft/rooftop party.

As an observer, I found the human drama that played out among the students most fascinating. David repeatedly emphasizes that he’s not there to teach them how to get a job, that he’s there to help them become great photographers, and that greatness is what he expects of them. The challenge of producing great work in a week with the eyes of David Alan Harvey upon them, as well as those of the other students and often a big time person from the NYT, NatGeo, Magnum or the like, results in a plethora of interesting tensions. There are many emotional ups and downs each student will deal with as the week progresses. Toward the end of the process some are just looking for that one great shot that will tie it all together while others are still struggling to find the core of their project, and probably more to the point, the core of who they are as photographers. David is a master of asking probing questions that get to the heart of each student’s challenge. His method is like some kind of cross between the dialectical method and psychotherapy. A lot of back and forth, arriving at the truth through dialog. Watching him work with the students, helping them figure out who they are in relation to their stories and guiding them to find new approaches to their work is a special thing to behold. He’s always looking for some spark, for that narrow little angle that will illuminate a strong point of view, that will bring an essay together and elevate it above the mundane, for that little something that will make the photographs great.

Having witnessed some of that process, I found I had an emotional investment in the outcome. There in the loft on Friday night, I was genuinely rooting for the students. I knew where they had been the day before and was familiar with the challenges they still faced. Of course I was confident that they would do it, former students tell me they always do, but I was excited to see what form it would take. Then as the slideshows progressed and I saw how those challenges were answered, how the students had succeeded, I was genuinely happy for them, and happy for David as well. It was a grand achievement for each and every one. There was one particular picture that brought a little tear to my eye when it came on the screen. I knew that was the photo the student needed to get. I had heard the class exhorting him to go out and get it. I knew how much hard work and anguish had gone into it. Then I saw it and it was a great photo. The student had significantly raised the level of his game, which is really what it’s all about, much of it anyway. I really felt that success on an emotional level. And I don’t think feelings like that are unusual in David’s workshops. The environment is very supportive. Everyone shares everyone else’s frustrations and relishes everyone else’s successes. They all ride the others’ emotional roller coasters as well as their own. Maybe it’s something like foxhole camaraderie. Lifelong friendships are formed. The workshop is a fantastic experience all around.

Anyway, I’m in Blackian length territory if not Blackian profundity, so I’d better leave it at this for now. Thanks and congratulations David. And thanks and congratulations to all you students. It was a pleasure meeting you and seeing your work. You all done real good.

  82. PICTURES, DAMMIT, WHERE ARE THE PICTURES? it is exceedingly difficult to live vicariously through the lives of others without pictures. The vast majority of Burnians who could not be there last night want to know what went on, so come on, get them pictures up!

  83. MW, a good write-up. It sounds about right, a tough week to be sure but as it should be, not unlike climbing a mountain. Actually, quite like an ascent with a team I’d imagine.

  84. MW, you gave a very accurate description of what it is like in a DAH workshop. Glad you got to witness it.

  85. I had the great privilege of attending the event. Having just moved to NY three weeks ago to start my year at ICP, it was by far a highlight (my transition is, to say the least, difficult; I’m living in a rough neighborhood where, just the night before, there was a major shootout literally at the doorstep of my apartment). There was so much talent and energy there and I had this overwhelming sense of participating in something grand. I wish I had the opportunity to meet more Burnians but I unfortunately didn’t get a chance to make it to the rooftop party (a major disappointment). Thank you all, and thanks David for the hospitality.

    Mw,
I love your Inside …I love your Outside …You should write for a paper or something…
Thank you for the immediate report

And as AKAKY says…now, we need some visual stimulation…

Now I have to be ready for some birthday announcements…oime

    Gravy for me too!!!

  87. Finally got to read your WS review, Michael. Thanks for taking the paind and time to tell us, definitely a great read.

I have been wondering lately about the paradox between the idea of photographic greatness/achievment, which resides in “getting the shot(s)” (vs merely capturing pictures of…) and so much of what is being shown these days, which seem to try to get the shot, the feel, shooting from the hip (freely, easily, then edit as a bunch), so to speak. Which does work, but does not create great photography.

Your comments are on the other hand remind us a photograph (not just the subject one is shooting) is something one may have to put a lot on a line for, including possibly one’s own station towards life, and the world, at least as far as emerging photography go. It may seem not so for a few of us, given what we show others, but yes, a lot of self-questionning goes into achieving some kind of photography as we go on taking pictures.

    Thanks again, Michael.

    I love you all…

  89. Books?.. who need books??.. now somebody can tell me if ‘Outside/Inside’ by Bruce Davidson is the same as ‘Journey of Consciousness’.. where a no is not accepted..

  90. MICHAEL WEBSTER…

good reportage from the workshop….you behaved yourself for the two days you were with us as per promised…i would have been pleased if you had been there for all five as you know, but at least you got a taste….i am sure you can imagine that every class is a bit different…the tone of the class and even my teaching style varies with the dynamic and demographic of the class..customized, limited edition..this was a particularly bonded group or maybe i think that every time…yes, think so…many of my former students were there as well..a nice feeling i must say, and i always recommend to every young photographer who is on the move forward to start paying back immediately and long before you are “successful” …do it…works for everyone….

    cheers, david

    p.s.

Bruce Davidson called me this morning and told me how much he enjoyed the audience here in the loft on friday evening…he asked lots of questions about Burn and about this audience…he was sincerely curious, not being an online person himself….also said he had not gone to bed that late in years…well, just proves never too late to be corrupted…

  91. MW –

I greatly enjoyed your write-up. It gave me a perspective on what David does and how he goes about it that I have seen nowhere else. How fortunate these young photographer are to be coming of age in such technological advancements have made such an exciting – if challenging – time for photography and at the same time to have pro from the old school so truly dedicated to help launch them into the world.

You also created in me a nostalgia for something I have never seen or experienced – a Manhattan roof party, of any kind. I want to experience one – and I want it to be a burn party.

And to get to see the life work of Bruce Davidson… whoa…

I say, anytime you feel motivated, go ahead, venture in Blackian country…

  92. DAH-

When you suggest that every young photographer…on the move forward…should start paying back immediately- I assume you mean in sharing knowledge, teaching, and otherwise helping others along in the craft?

-very true I would say, as we all have something to learn and something to share with each other in our common pursuits of art & journalism!

I don’t know if I mentioned to you that Will Gray sends his regards, now living outside of Hesperus, he expressed a sincere interest in catching up on one of your trips back down this way…He hosts an excellent writing course on Creative Non-Fiction each year- as a photographer trying to better craft thoughts into words I have learned immensely from his experience and ability to teach!

Also wondering if you would be interested in approaching the Open Shutter Gallery here in town with a Burn show, showcasing the best of Burn (perhaps some of your own work), & Burn 01 book signing? Perhaps catching some of the West coast, Rocky Mountain crowd…? Just a thought.

Hope to catch up soon, wish I could be in Jackson! Best-Jeremy

    -Jeremy

  93. Just in case anyone in this room isn’t listening in on the convo over in “Advance Warning” as well (and just where *is* the crowd hanging about now as we wait anxiously for the next DAH post?)…

    Anyway..

nice report, indeed…:))…and yes, feel free to not only step into the lovely, mad nation that is Blackian country, but feel free and with liberty, to expand, enlarge, take it over :)))

…like Burn country, there are no despots nor kings nor dictators….simply citizens and civilians alike….having spent a long and delerious night Burning at a Harvey-workshop bash, i’m happy to hear you made it spinning words rather than with a spun head…(i seemed to had experienced both)…..savor the memory….and the books :))

  95. I just reread my statement to MW and I am embarrassed. I don’t what it is, but it seems that whenever I leave a comment on burn I somehow manage to drop every fourth or fifth word that I meant to write, but I do not see these mistakes until the damn statement is already published.

Yes, I read it before I click “submit” but when I do, my mind puts the missing words back in and I read them just as though they were there. Then, when it is published, I see what I have really done.

  96. FF, before you click the submit button, go back and read what you have written out out loud. Don’t rush; read word for word out loud and listen to yourself as you read. The gaps will become obvious. I am a great dropper of words and I find that 9 times out of 10 this will solve the problem. The times I don’t do it are the times I have to come back and apologize for not making any sense.

  97. That’s a great tip, Akaky. I’m pretty bad about dropping words, as well… Maybe it’s because I’m a poor typist and my fingers can’t keep up :-)

Just to make sure, it’s OK to have dual citizenship as a Burnian/Blackian. Is that correct?

  98. dad (akaky): :)))

    to wit: (??)

“…what you have written out out loud”…

did you read that out-out loud?….or did you mean what you’ve written out, read out loud (in this case, wouldn’t that be redundant (the read clipped with the first out)….or did you write that and Akaky IRL read it out loud, humming over the 1st or 2nd out, knowing full well that someone would call you out on your out writing, aloud…..;)))

well, Frostfrog :))…welcome to my world here…i never re-read what i’ve typed (or written out ;) ), prior to submit-ting….let alone, reading it out loud….though i do read out loud (much to the dismay of my son) everything i’m writing for real (essays, poems, prose for publication)….

and you know what, i still rarely hear my errors….until i see it in print, and by then, i’m crawling back to the bat cave

    b

    ok, to be read aloud….or out(side)-in(side) loud….

  99. amend: i meant i never read aloud what i type here at Burn (or any other blog),…’cause for me, the comments are like conversations…

but, i ALWAYS read out-out loud anything I write in earnest (which i guess, what i’ve written above wasn’t really written in earnest since I did read it out loud, so please ignore)….

so i guess, yes….language was meant to be spoken and listened to, and so, yes, anything one writes should also be spoken, out or a loud…..:)))

ok, gotta disappear again for the week…deadlines…

    OUT LOUD! :))

    b

  100. fuck ;)))…see, Akaky is write, this

“above wasn’t really written in earnest since I did read it out loud, so please ignore)…”

should have been (had i read it out loud and heard the mistake)

“above wasn’t really written in earnest since I did NOT read it out loud, so please ignore)…”

i’m crawling back to proust …

    b

  101. a civilian-mass audience

    Hmmm…
First, I have to read aloud the text…
Then I have to go along the text…to find any differences between… what I read and what I have typed
of course…I have to deal with my poor English skills….
    Many times,the I-phone or I-pad doesn’t want to cooperate…
Lot’s of work for one civilian…
BUT I will try to follow AKAKY’S golden rule…
    BURNIANS…let’s proofread or waterproof…our comments

    …I LOVE u All…!!!

  102. I followed you, Akaky. “Speak what you have written out, out loud”.

I can just never decide when to write as I speak and when to follow the rules ;)

  103. i’m very late here on this thread… but I wanted to congratulate everyone involved in Burn 01.

to all the photographers and the whole behind the scenes crew, and especially to david and anton, for dedicating so much time and energy into turning a pipe dream into a reality. no doubt the work involved in the editing and designing of Burn 01 was immense… I look forward to seeing a copy!

so congratulations!!! as always, much inspiration and respect

and MW thanks for the report, i enjoyed reading it… i could use a trip to the big apple… still my consolation is that down here spring has arrived in full effect and i’ve had my first barefoot days in a long long while…

  104. Received my copy of Burn 01 yesterday. I’m burning on a big print project right now so haven’t had time to linger over it, but it looks great on a flip through. Fantastic design and choice of essays. Congrats to all!

    CP

  105. Oh! Charles, when did you order? I’ve been wondering how long it will take, and there isn’t tracking info that I can find (nor would I expect, really)…

  106. Untapped–the one photo of the skyline with the silhouettes–excellent. Thanks for sharing. Last time I was up there I about froze to death in the wind.

  107. a civilian-mass audience

MRS.UNTAPPED …the visual signal looks quite pro …at least to my civilian “eye”…
thanks for sharing …as MRS.BIRTHDAY girl LEE GUTHRIE…wrote above !!!

  108. Also, happy birthday Rumi. He is 800+ years old today. Thanks Civi. I’m not a Mrs. though. Been single for almost 3 years now.

  109. “Much that is learned is bound to be bad habits. You’re always beginning again. – W. S. Merwin”

Got that off Paris Review’s twitter feed, but it sounded like something David would say.

  110. Sharni Jayawardena

Would love to buy a copy of Burn 01. Tried going through the right channels, but Sri Lanka is not listed under ‘Rest of the World’. Oh dear. Let me know what I should do?

  111. hey guys….quick question: :))

any word on how long it will take our copy to get to Toronto…ordered copy on day 1, just wondering if its stuck at the border, as often happens with mail coming across ??

    cheers
    bob

  112. Back for a sec: should I ever make a book, heaven forbid, I’ll hire the Burnteam, all of them.. :)))

  113. Pingback: BURN01 arrived | Lassal

  114. Jim,
I guess the delivery within Europe is much faster than the delivery to overseas.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed you’ll receive it soonest. Waiting is pain in this context.
    Receiving is a relieve.

  115. Can`t believe I missed this event.
Wish you good luck with the magazine.
    Best regards from Germany

  116. keep an eye out for Lens Blog…today or tomorrow….story coming about BURN 01…i mean , how cool is that? NYT giving us so much good press all along…i am industry and lifelong friends with several editors at the Times..Kathy Ryan at the Magazine….and Michelle McNally , Director of Photography..but i almost never see them..i have not shot a story myself for the Times in several years…so, i do not really know why they are being so nice…anyway, now the man is..Jim Estrin..he has been our champion here..i did buy the boy a beer once and i guess he decided to hang out…seriously , it is our community in which Jim and others are very interested…..now, with all this press , i am going to have to stick around just a bit longer….can’t just take a pat on the back and then walk out the door…at least not where i come from….

    cheers, david

  117. DAH, congratulations once again
    About Burn.01…!!!!!!
The “industry” should start to notice.. They already did notice..
And I know what they are thinking..
“why the heck didn’t I think of IT first”???!!!!
Let me tell u why.. Because “they” only thought of money first..
Congratulations man.. All credit to you..
I know what you gonna respond:”we did it all together..etc”..
Ok sure.. Many people helped , but in this revolution ,
you are the “Che” guy…feel me?

  118. UDAY K…

you are in Texas right? hmmm, maybe they just are not letting Burn 01 into Texas…Jim did not get his either…it seems that everyone in Europe is getting their books on time and in the U.S. they are not..and we are shipping from New York..cannot imagine the problem, but we are trying to find out right now….worst case scenario, i hand deliver..

    cheers, david

  119. But let’s face it.. As Americans we do have that reputation that we use books as TV stands ..
That we never read.. Not that sophisticated etc..
Book printed in Italy so I’m thinking that an address in the US is equivalent to “no rush”..
    Laughing.. Laughing…
My fellow Americans , please buy the Book and let that TV cool off for a minute, will ya?

  120. I ordered the book as soon as the announcement was made. I felt sure it would be here as that was some time ago. But when I got to Maui no show on the book. I sent an email to the listed address on my invoice. Can somebody find out for me? Really want to see it…..

  121. LEE…KURT

i have the picture….shipping was not something i was paying much attention to, but now i am on the case….obviously something was not done correctly…i hope that just as obviously i am going to fix it….trying to figure out what went wrong right now…from what i can tell right now, many of the books were not sent out until last thursday….i am not sure why…and i will have the late shipper shot at dawn…

  122. DAH, I am quite sure that one day soon I will arrive home from a nasty day at work and Burn1 will be there to brighten my day.
I was much more concerned with getting my order in soon as I would think this is going to sell out quickly, any word on how many have sold to date.

  123. KURT..

i think it will sell out quickly ..think we have sold about half which is phenomenal for less than two weeks old and with Burn as the only outlet or marketing spot…i have had already offers from traditional publishing houses to distribute or somehow be involved…and lot of potential here at Burn in general, but none of us who work here really want a full time job with Burn..we like it as a hobby, but might not really want to get super sponsored since that would mean a full time job and maybe, jusy maybe the ugly stress word….not for me…anyway, come down and sit on my porch…i will be home eventually …

    cheers, david

  124. It’s kind of fun waiting to see burn.01 but hearing reports – but that is because all reports are the kind you want to hear. Am excited to receive my copy, okay copies…I am a collector of the photobook and surely this is one I want to have more than one of. The only question is, should I order still more? :) What do you think, DAH, how many copies of burn.01 should a gal have? Was just reading how Danny Lyon bought the last 24 copies of Bikeriders 4 years after it was published (the first time around) despite his dad wondering what the heck he wanted them for, and I am sure he was very happy he did.

If only about half of the copies are left, and the readership of Lens is xxx,xxx – and the piece is coming out maybe tomorrow…

Glad you are headed to (or in) cowboy land. Certainly a great photo awaits.

  125. Erica,

I’ve had Burn.01 10 days now. Shipping appears to be much faster in Europe. I ordered on the day the info to buy appeared here.

I often buy more than one copy of photography books. Still have shrink wrapped copies of Sam Abell’s The Photographic Life, and Bill Allard’s The Photographic Essay. Wish I had bought two copies of Winogrand 1964. Somehow have ended up with three copies of DAH’s Cuba book. Found two of them along with some copies of Allard’s Portrait’s of America in a discount book store.

Burn.01 is certainly worth buying a few copies. It’s a limited edition of 1000 right? About 500 sold in two weeks. Sure to become a sort after collector’s publication. Not just for the high quality work featured inside, but also for its historical significance – the first online magazine to make a print edition.

    Your essay looks great!

  126. I ordered the first day and also was starting to be concerned, more that it was lost or something wrong with the order…

I sent an email Monday and got a reply yesterday from Micaela saying my book had been sent and should be arriving soon. I was beginning to think the same thing as Kurt about my mailman (that he’s a fan of burn and hadn’t finished it yet)….

And just the other day I read an article about modern consumerism, and the results of a recent study that show you tend to enjoy and appreciate something more if you wait or delay the acquisition of it…

  127. CLIVE…

voice from the past!! great to hear from you….i would like to catch up with you at some point, so pop me an email and we will figure that out….

    ERICA…

i have learned the hard way…dammit…on almost everything! but for sure now when it comes to books i like , i make sure i have two copies of anything i really care about…if it is a book with your work in it and you suspect that it may gain in value either sentimentally or financially, you had better stock up…i was literally in a panic recently with Div Soul when i saw the price going up and i had few copies…in the book world, or any world with a finite number of objects, you never want to take anything for granted…

    ANDREW B…

i am pleased to hear you heard from Micaela directly…good for her…whatever books that did not go out on time as per expected, i made sure that they were sent Priority US mail…nobody should have to wait more than another day..thanks for your patience….

    cheers, david

  128. Good to know! Thought maybe it was a problem with my rural dirt road mailbox…or perhaps David was planning on hand delivering the thing to Durango following his rendezvous in Jackson!

Never-the-less…even more excited than ever to crack open a brew and leaf through the pages of Burn 01!

Congrats to all & look forward to seeing the NY Times LENS feature this project!

    Cheers

  129. a little road trips moment…

something happened yesterday that i wanted to share. i’ve been really very consumed with the launching of this photo biz Develop i am starting, for months and months all day long i have been swimming in photography, but other people’s photography, photography organizations, photographers, etc, and at first i was feeling that i was too busy to shoot anything other than assignments, and then i would think about shooting for myself lot, but i felt full all around – full of dark light that i didn’t know if i had finished entirely (and still don’t) and full of photography. I would see my beloved light outside my desk while i was working, and i would stand at the window watching it, knowing how beautiful it was, but just standing when normally i’d be out the door to shoot. i almost felt like an amnesiac, trying to connect bits of recognition and knowing but missing something, and i couldn’t even remember what that might be. In the last few weeks i kept feeling i was forgetting to do something, and i’d check my calendar to see what it was, but it was nothing tangible. on occasion i would go out and take a few images, but more out of some sense of muscle memory than anything else.

then yesterday i was out doing errands, when one by one i felt little lights go off inside, almost like numbers on a bingo board lighting up, with each one i felt a warmth and a joy. faces and shapes and moments and light were carrying meaning, and excitement, and love and interest again. i walked and rode the subway without a camera and watched and enjoyed and saw and felt and composed, and in between i read the whole of the lovely lovely book Once by Wim Wenders and i stocked up on film for something i want to shoot for myself tonight. truly, the lights coming on was nothing i did, sometimes things have their own time.

  130. One more day waiting anxiously for the mail man…
    Is Burn.01 on the mail?
    Is it?
    Is it?
    Fingers crossed
    :)

    9:19am
Goodmorning from the Plastic Capital of the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  131. Erica, should be able to drop by in Rome in the next 10 days, was hoping for more though.. and things happen when they have to :)

  132. I still have not gotten mine – was ordered on the very first day, hours after the link went up..and even thugh I’m in Kentucky the mail and UPS and Fedex are all good about getting to here, since they all have major hubs operating in the area…

was hoping to have it by the week-end…

    :(

  133. Was informed that my copy of Burn.01 is waiting for me back home—next to my copy of Anton’s 893 magazine… won’t be able to see them though for at least 3 more weeks… in any case, according to my girlfriend they’re both awesome…

  134. Burn.01 has arrived, the printing exceeds my expectations – bw looks like bw and the color is delicious. Thanks again to the photogs and editors and administrators alike who contributed to make this all that it is, and of course to you DAH for being the generative creative. Looking forward to the time to settle in and really drink it in, and to read the words from Bob and his uncle, Akaky. Soon comes the Lens review?

  135. My Copy showed up today in beautiful downtown S.E. Texas. Yeah! It was sent USPS Priority on October 6. Well, six days for Priority isn’t bad. lol

  136. Good news Jim.. It seems that Columbus guy was the problem.. Now that nasty pirate is gone .. it’s clear..
Today or tomorrow should be the day for the rest of us to hold Burn.01 in our hands… It’s always good to have something to “expect”.. The longer we wait the more value it gets…
Like a creation of a book.. Like the good wine… It takes some time:)

  137. UPS just came and gone…guy told me :”oh man, nothing for you today..”….
ok i have another option, and the name is “wait”…. and im gonna grab this opportunity from the hair and i WILL wait…!!! how about that mrs.universe? how about that? lol

  138. BOOK IS HERE
    BOOK MADE IT
    BURN
    BURN
    BURN
    BURN.01
    BURN.01 MADE IT HOME ALIVE
    BURN IS HERE
    ALL, have faith..
BURN IS HRRE.. ALIVE.. in my hands..
    Um shaking.. Literally..
See u later.. Fucking tears in my eyes..
    I feel like CIVI now..
    Book is here.. Yes
    Love u all..
    THANK U HARVEY
    THANK U DAVID
    THANK YOU ALL….
    peace

  139. I think mine got lost :(

Micaela sent a note saying mine was one of the first sent out and I should have had it by now….

Oh well, a few more days waiting. will make the review more sweet.

  140. Sorry Andrew.. If u were close I’d give u mine.. All I wanted to is to open it once.. Touch it.. Once.. And then move on.. Go do some more pictures.. The only thing that counts.. For us at least

  141. Congratulations on a fabulous Burn 01 – a class act filled with LOVE! And did you notice how delicious it smells?! As delicious as pavlova with double cream and raspberries, and the pages are silky smooth, brimming with essays conveying messages, colours and so many different moods!

Art and photojournalism under one roof! Congratulations to you ALL for making a dream come true!

  142. Oh well…guess that leaves me….sometime soon I hope.

Same thing happens when they gate check my luggage….it’s the first in, and the last out….

  143. Speaking of luggage, if there are any burnians in the Halifax, NS area, let me know…will be up there (New Glasgow and Halifax) for a few days….

    good light,
    a.

  144. Oh Andrew I got so many “luggage” stories.. Don’t get me started..
But I won’t forget back in 93 when UA eventually “found” my luggage 25 days later..
Only one day before my return ticket (24 days with borrowed clothes)
    ….
Oh and another one.. When coming back home from Look3 I realized ghat my stuff went back to C/Ville..
I didn’t care about clothes but.. The book “Living Proof” signed and hand given to me by David..
    (can’t remember the airlines though…)
    Hmmm.. Delta I think:(

  145. Well, it turns out that not only did some mail person decide to open the envelope and read my book, they then tossed it in the back of the truck and let it wander around (it also appears to have ventured too close to water at some point) until it was found, re-wrapped, and identified (I guess they matched it up with the empty original envelope). It arrived rather tattered and dog-eared, with a very nice apologetic note from the USPS.

But all of the photo pages and articles are intact, so I got to look at it. Amazing how different so many of these images with which I’m familiar look printed as opposed to onscreen. WONDERFUL! As are both word essays by Anonymous photographer Akaky (I think we should all begin to append that to his name any time it is in public print) and brother Bob.

Hats off to all the contributors – and to David and Anton and Anna-Marie and Diego and all others involved…excellent job!

Oh, and Micaela assured my that another copy is already on it’s way to me, since we figured mine had been hopelessly lost… so I have a “good” copy as well :)

Wish I could join the crew at the OBX party tonight. Am sure you’ll have a great time.

    good light, all.
    a.

  146. Andrew, your tale beats the multiple attempts of delivering the payment of mine, followed online hour after hour, since Oct. 5th.. today finally it was successful, PHEW!

And if my night table breaks down it’s the fault of the people hanging out here and misleading this poor little gal.. between Outside/Inside, one of Paul Himmel’s books, Zen and the Art of Archery, and Burn01 its legs are bent badly!! Who says books don’t sell????

  147. I’m convinced mine is on a slow boat to China. Someone probably threw it on the wrong barge.

  148. Lee,
That’s a major buummer…..have you reached out to Micaela? The email address is in the confirmation email you shold have gotten when you ordered. If you don’t have it, contact me off-list here and I’ll send it. Evidently, there is tracking information kept – it was determined early on that mine went out in the first shipment, thus we were able to decide it must have been lost when it hadn’t arrived (and indeed, it was. I’m still amazed they were able to figure out where to send it, since it obviously was loose from it’s envelope).

Anyway, it is worth the wait….

    eva
I feel sympathy for your poor night table – I know too well the the result of hanging out here and the sudden insurgence of desire to buy these photography book things….mine are in stacks on tables all over the house….

  149. LEE…

on the shipping info you have here on Burn , there is clearly a name given for questions or problems: Diego Orlando ….Diego is not monitoring this blog, but does pay attention to any shipping problems that he knows about…..he says he has received no message from you…in any case, since i do monitor here, i have given now your message to him…many thanks for your patience mi amiga…

    cheers, david

  150. I have to say that over here shipment works really well and fast, Diego does a fantastic job, I had my copies after two days, and would I have chosen to pay online like any normal person all would have been fine! But sometimes I’m a tad stubborn and insist I do it my way.. bad choice this time around, but with a smooth happy ending :)

  151. DAH, Lee…

Didn’t mean to steer you the wrong direction Lee – I thought the info on the link here said to contact Diego for quantity over 10 only….the email I got after I purchased, with the confirmation in it, had Micaela’s contact info for any questions or problems with the order….

DAH, if that’s not the way they should be going you may want to check the order confirmation email text – it has micaela’s email in it as the contact.

It’s all good though, especially the images IN PRINT!

Speaking of print… are there any of teh burn prints left for sale? Perhaps you can point me somewhere to see what there is, if so?

  152. GRACIE…

smiling…well, we would love love to be able to lower the price…if we did, it would be way lower than other books in its class, but we would do it anyway….maybe the next edition 02 will have a lower price…if we can, we will….still, anyone interested in photography is most likely buying $50. books on a regular basis…i buy at least four books per month and i think many do…i mean this is my life, my work…i love books…i can forgo many things before i will forgo books….photography equals book…..and if you come to see me, i will give you one….

    cheers, david

  153. ANDREW B…

are you talking about the prints we had displayed in new york and later in washington? if so, there are just a few around…some were sold, some returned to the photographer….my idea of having a serious Burn gallery just turned out to be more than any of us could handle…a good idea, but a very big job..the only way a gallery can work is if someone takes it on as a full time job….what we might do here as part of our design re-vamp is to have a section for selected prints and books….let’s give this some thought…

    cheers, david

  154. dah,
thanks for your offer and your explanation but i wasnt asking for me. do you have a way for people to get a book to someone who absolutely deserves it but cannot afford it?

  155. Gracie, “do you have a way for people to get a book to someone who absolutely deserves it but cannot afford it?” – something like a “deliver to” field?

  156. finally had a payday from a stock sale which makes it affordable.. to send to the uk..
maybe actually see it next year ..
if people want it they’ll get it :o)

  157. David A H

Yes, I was thinking about those prints – there are some photogs here I think I’d like to collect a print from. Never saw what was printed for the displays in NYC and later DC, so not sure if they are the images that have appealed to me…

Also, I like the idea of maybe selected prints and books available. I have a couple ideas, I will put them together and email or skype you. Is the david@burnmag the best email to use?

  158. GRACIE…

i am sure you might imagine, even though we have never met, that if someone were standing in front of me who loved the book but had no money, that i would indeed give that person a book…i do not know if this classifies as “a way” or “a system”, but it is the best i can imagine or think of at the moment…

    ANDREW B..

    yes

    MICHAEL K…

sorry, i missed your comment..re-post?? i have been involved in hand made book making all week and have missed many comments…i will do something at Photoweek i think, but not sure what exactly…will know today or tomorrow…i do hope we will meet again as last year…

  159. DAH & Andrew B: micaela’s was the contact for my email too. Thanks for passing it on DAH. I had emailed micaela and no response. I am looking forward to having it in hand.

  160. “We should read to give our souls a chance to luxuriate.” ~Henry Miller

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.”– Cicero

    BURN01 and Burn family:

    I wish to tell you a story….

Once, seemingly a lifetime ago, i was saved by a good. At a moment of corner-taped time and in a place of squalid silence, i was given a book by a person of whom I knew very little about. Sitting in a pale-green room, surrounded by the hum of hollers and weeping, a rocking of tv-channel switching and arguments between people who were housed in a particularly lonely hall stuck together by the awkward grace of their own unforgiving and loneliness, I was given a small paperwork by a nurse who strangely sensed that I needed the comfort of a story to make it through a long, November weekend. After squeakily thanking her, I opened up the first page and read the epigram on the 2nd page, and Cicero’s words seemed like the anchor to which I understood that if i held tightly, i would make it through the night and endless weekend….somehow amid the squalor of the sound, she’d sensed that i needed books, words, stories to help make sense of what I was struggling through and fighting against, somehow had sensed that I had spent my entire life up to that point, 32 years, in the comfort and knowing of books that had pinned my life to a simple navigation. she was right…

It has often seemed (real or imagined) that in moments of joy and loss, I have always turned to story tellers to help navigate and make sense of the world around, my own tiny life and the larger, odder, seemingly unknowable and undecodeable life upon and with which each of us attempts to make sense of the rhyming and the ruckus given us. My entire life i’ve carried books: in my backpacks, in boxes and truncks, in coat pockets and jeans, in my arms and on the back of toilet seats, on bus and train carriages and along writing tables and rocking chairs. I’ve housed my life within the comfort of those extraordinary homes from which we gather, collect and feed upon: novels and poems and art books and photography and history and family albums and dog-eared friends and pristine new partners. Wear and old coat, buy a new book, has always seemed to be the calculus to which i’ve framed my life and continue to do so…

What i cherish most about Burn01 is not it’s significance as a milestone (though make no mistake about it, it certainly is), as a symbol and reality of what can be accomplished through love and wilding enthusiasm, not simply for it’s beautiful design and unfolding, not only for it’s beautiful selection of photographic and written stories, for its humour and celebration, for its humor and pathos, for its unyielding believe in the photograph as a language by which we speak out against the pressure and disappearance of things, but because this book, to me, represents a simple, glorious thing: the soul of family and life, the soul of unbridled belief that without one another, we are nothing and lost.

The essays that make up this book are not only powerful, intelligent, thoughtful and thought-provoking, but they are much simpler in their cumulative power: the speak to what is best about each of us. The desire and belief to ring out against the hollow emptying. Photographs, like all language, like all attempts at story telling, are tricky and slippery things. Like smoke, they seem to embody space and place and yet often fail us in their ability to be caught, and yet how defined and how important their scent and memory and demarcation. Make no mistake, Burn01 is a beautiful anthology of pictures that span the spectrum of the photographic medium from documentary work to conceptual theatre, from witness-baring stories to excavations of the internal dreams of our imagination, from the geographic real to the dreamt-up imagined country, from the scour of debt and demise to the color of a bird’s roseate wings fanning. Letter writing and shaving of skin, broken bodies and brilliant-dream-red hair, from needles to bursts of sun, this anthology contains everything that each of us best hopes for a good story:

and that is the reawakening of ourselves….

but more importantly, it is the culmination of a simpler belief, David’s belief, that making sense of this extraordinarily short and dolorous life, is always an act of belief, an attempt not to pin immortality to the fanning pages but to give back to one another, to inspire and embrace, to embody and of-body each of us, to make the grain and seeding of things real: sowing, germanation, tending the fields and gardens of what surrounds us: in a word:

    soul.

Burn, like the best a families, has been defined by that: the belief in one another. Through laughter and speech, over drinks and conversations, through shouting and fights, through reconciliation and forward-thinking, Burn is to me an apotheosis of belief. As someone who has, in a small way, tried to write and help and make pictures, to mentor and support, to love and laugh, to cry and hug somemore, this book is a solid root of something that, amid the shouting and hum of the internet hive, that is more substantial:

it stands for each of you.

Honestly, it is one of my favorite photogrpahic anthologies. I say that not as a contributor, not as a friend of David and Anton, not as a person who has known or met or loved many of the contributors. I say that as a person who not only buys and needs photogrpahic books, but as a person who believes, without waver, that the small things that we give one another are what define and make ourselves less broken, less pain-filled, more ebullient….

Above all, David and Anton, amid all the doubters and cynics, the professionals and marketers, believed in something simple and from that this extraordinary germination….

burn01 is, like all things, not an end point, but a continued reminder that we are all connected, even in argument or division. We need to tell and shift and shape stories. We need to span the world, from the small letters in our drawers to the rages of war, we each of us count ourselves fortunate if we have been given a small story that was born from a place of honest and committed love and connection.

the book is beautiful. the stories and photographs, the printing and design, the architecture and the energy are an inspiration.

but what i cherish is this book, from here forward, will remain a reminder of the importance of each one of you who contributes and works their hearts out to make sense of life and to share in that communal endeavor.

amid a world tired and challenged, scheming and enrage, buz-honey’d-drunken and mirror-staring, there is still that gorgeous, untethered human aspiration: to connect and to breathe…

thank you to david, anton, anna-maria, diego, all the contributors and most importantly you, for Burn01 is really about you, regardless of perspective and language, ideology or drum….

and Gracie, if you cannot afford it, i will give you one of my copies…you can write directly….

the best of books are not the ones that remain behind, on our shelves, but the ones we give away and share with others….

the ones we use to help others to, if even for a moment, smile and say:

damn, I am of this place and of this family, no matter how scattered that family may be….

    Burn01….

aflamed, alight, but unextinguishalbe, if even in name…

    b

  161. Books; I can’t imagine my place without books. Yet I haven’t bought a book in about a year. I’ve wanted to, but last year was a financial disaster and I’m only just now beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I decided not to buy Burn 01; not because I didn’t want to, but because I don’t have that amount of money at the moment. So, I decided to support Burn in a different way!

Burn 01 costs NZ$145, and I’m sure it’s worth every cent. However NZ$81 of that is shipping; NZ is a loooong way from Italy! :-) So; instead of giving $81 to a shipping company; I’d rather give it to Burn.

Up until about 9-months ago I always tried to give US$10-15 per month to Burn. I only stopped because of financial constraints (and would resume as soon as things improved). Well; things are a little better than last year now so once more I’m able to continue with regular donations.

I work on the theory that the donated money goes directly to Burn; and if everyone can spare a regular 10 bucks it would mount up to quite a tidy sum.

So; congratulations on Burn 01 and also the New York Times piece! Onwards and upwards!!!!

    Cheers :-)

  162. AKAKY: I am not an anonymous photographer.

AKAKY IRL: I beg your pardon?

AKAKY: I am not an anonymous photographer.

AKAKY IRL: I see. I know I’m going to regret asking this, but what the hell, you only live once, so let’s take a whack at it. Who says you’re an anonymous photographer?

AKAKY: Andrew B. He says that since I got into Burn 01, everyone should call me Anonymous photographer Akaky. I am not anonymous. How can I be anonymous? I mean, you know who I am, right?

AKAKY IRL: Yeah, but it’s not something I go around telling people. Knowing you is like watching your sister date your best friend; you wonder whether you should tell her that he’s cheated on every girl friend he’s ever had. On the other hand, you wonder whether you should tell him that she’s got a nasty case of the clap. In both cases, I’m better off just keeping my mouth shut.

AKAKY: What a way with words you have.

    AKAKY IRL: Thank you.

AKAKY: I didn’t mean it as a compliment.

AKAKY IRL: I know, but if I can’t get praise, I’ll take sarcasm instead. And you’re not an anonymous photographer, guy; no one looking at that book is going to see any of your photographs. They’ll just read that thing you wrote.

    AKAKY: What’s your point?

AKAKY IRL: You’re an anonymous writer, bubba. Hell, as far as I know, you could be Anonymous himself.

AKAKY: I thought Anonymous was a woman.

AKAKY IRL: If anyone really knew who Anonymous was, he or she wouldn’t be Anonymous, would they?

AKAKY: I guess not. But I’m not an anonymous anything.

AKAKY IRL: Hey, dude, they don’t know that. Your Greek pal thinks you’re a frigging robot spewing spam left, right, and center all day long. How do they know who you are? How do I know who you are?

AKAKY: But you see me all the time.

AKAKY IRL: I see a lot of people all of the time. That doesn’t prove anything. You could be a spambot masquerading as a real person; I’m not going to go around checking your bona fides out. I’ve got better things to do with my time.

AKAKY: You don’t seriously believe I’m an automated spambot, do you?

AKAKY IRL: No. I seriously believe you’re a big pain in the ass. The family relationship between spammers and pains in the ass is very close, so I can see how people would think that you were.

AKAKY: Your belief in me is very touching, you know.

    AKAKY IRL: Thank you.

AKAKY: I was being sarcastic again.

AKAKY IRL: I know. You’re not very good at it, are you?

AKAKY: Not really. I don’t do it very often.

AKAKY IRL: Practice, dude, practice. The more you do it, the easier it’ll become.

AKAKY: I really don’t know why I talk to you.

AKAKY IRL: Beats the hell out of me, too.

on Panos’ pictures… I like it your way… but I think it isn’t fair, and even a total absurdity, when some of us compare Panos photography with the greatest picture takers in our human history – HCB, Harvey,

(I just saw the above insult )

  170. Don’t worry my “wooden negator”…
    You’ll get used to it..

And it’s not about me “proving” anything…

Panos, I hardly ever cite anyone, but here Dante’s “non ragioniam di lor, ma guarda e passa” would be most appropriate :)

  176. Hi David,

Will you be around the week of 1-5 November at the loft? Aga and myself are coming next week for PhotoPlus and then will be around the following week meeting editors. It would be great if there was the possibility to stay at the Kibbutz for a night or two like we did last time in April.

    Many thanks.

    Best,

    Davin

  177. DAVIN…

unfortunately we have had to close the Burn Hotel when i am not in town….we were just running into too many problems and a full time hotel manager job for mike and others, when all we wanted to do was to do a favor for some out of town folks…this goes against my general welcoming feeling of “mi casa es tu casa”, but a variety of problems involving too many people coming and going from my loft where i have my printers and equipment and books just necessitated this very unfortunate change…it was starting to resemble a college dormitory around here, which is great when you are in college, but that can remain a sentimental memory and not a daily reality imo….you and Aga were perfect guests, but the work involved for others with keys and cleaning etc just got to be too much….so sorry…i will also miss you this time around, since i will be in Oaxaca for Day of the Dead….by best to Aga and to you…your collaborative essay to be published soonest here on Burn…

    cheers, david
