My living room is a mess. The kind of chaos where I thrive. Pictures all over the floor. Pictures all over the tables and chairs and taped to the walls. We are swimming in pictures. Kaya and I are making a dummy for my upcoming zine BeachGames. Runs to the copy shop, pizza ordered in, fresh spring breeze, doors all opened and a fire going just to have a fire going. This is no way to do a dummy. Best to start on a wall. Yet the mood hit and so we just started doing it. These hand crafted dummies become one of a kind objects. Rough. Ragged. Raw. This work from Rio is brand new and all from the last 10 months. Fast work. Not to be put on a pedestal. Yet I hope I will draw you in. Force you to feel it too. The whole point of all my work. So it’s very fortuitous that simultaneously I am publishing Tell It Like It Is my reprint from 1967 and BeachGames from a few weeks ago. Both large print exhibitions at Look3.org in June. So I am putting in long days long nights. The spring breeze brings energy. It’s always about the energy. #beachgames #obx #BurnBooks

  1. Looking forward to both. And how amazing that you do all this and still devote so much time to the work of others. You recently devoted some time to a piece of my work, now in print, entering the distribution process through a venue few south of 68° latitude will ever see and I am so drained and exhausted as to be worthless, not only to others but even to myself. A human dynamo you are.

  2. I’d love to be sitting on that carpet watching you both add and subtract photos from those book dummies. I’m sure there’s a lot to learnt just watching…

making a dummy is THE moment of truth….happens FAST….the overall process takes time of course…and serious thinking about construction materials..binding, paper, etc…but the creative part comes quickly ..i got into a zen type trance two nights ago, and the whole thing came together in a few hours…tweaking later? sure…but not too much…over think anything on the sequence pairing level and you are dead…gut reactions work for this part…after all it is gut reactions your readers will be experiencing .. so you need to make for the layout the most visceral of decisions….

    cheers, david

  4. PAUL…

i should add that shooting is visceral….so the layout should be as well…i read so much about book production and very little is said about the SHOOTING…the book production is of course very important yet the most important part of a book is the actual photographing process…and once you have the layout for a book, you are DONE…the creative process is OVER…the marketing, selling, is of course necessary but not a part of the creative process…..if you are selling one book, you sure need to be shooting on another….

i ordered Sam’s book as well…really looking forward to it….we published his Postcards from Home and Middle of Somewhere here on Burn, yet it will interesting to see it all tied together in one place..i have always thought Sam a fine photographer…and so great he did it all at home…..i am very anxious to see how it works as a book…how it transcends ….it is definitely a warm family story…just because of where he is and the subject matter, he will be compared to Trent Parke’s work of course…i have high expectations….

    cheers, david
