Kathy Ryan and Scott Thode

Kathy Ryan, Dir of Photography, NYTimes Magazine and Scott Thode editor/ curator at large. At home. These two have just given me the show of a lifetime at Look3.org this June. A triple whammy three part show. Brazil, Tell It Like It Is and Haenyeo Angels of the Sea. 50 60×40 prints. Killer. IF I can get it all done. Is this honor from Kathy and Scott a straight call? Hell no. It’s an inside job. We are long time friends. Point is, make good friends when you are young and before you become who you might be. Those are the people who know you. Thanks amigos

  1. 50 Big Prints! Can’t wait!! Makes me appreciate being nervous just putting together a portfolio for a review….

And David, the “inside job” is how it is everywhere, and that’s excellent advice. My dad always said the people you meet and friends you make are your personal “stepping stones”. Even if you’re happy where you’re standing, you never know when one might need a “stepping stone” that might in some way help get you where you want to go.

Looking forward to seeing you and the whole Burn crew.

    good light, all.

  2. DAVID ALAN HARVEY. Who puts up the green for 50 large format prints and, i assume, shipping and framing costs also? Thats a lot of moolah what ever way you slice it. Is it on the festivals bill( with a commission for sales)? Do you and Mike make them from your own wallet? do look 3 have their own frames and ask you to print to size? A bit of each?

I think many people will be interested just how a gig like this gets funded and what the requirements/conditions are.

most festivals pay for printing….Arles, Perpignan, and Look3 too…in this case, i am putting in a bit of my own money…i have been investing in myself since i did Tell It Like It Is , one of the essays being shown….yes i have had good commissions over the years like the Haenyeo: Angels of the Sea also being shown.

Yet I am going to work on my own thing come hell or high water and hope i get it financed in some way but if i don’t i am going to figure out something no matter….that way you never have any fear to put out what you have been doing…its yours and only yours…worth paying for if you must…maybe maybe maybe Fuji will come through will a bit of sponsorship for the Haenyeo since i shot it all with their cameras….i did very well with the Cuba limited time print sale we had here, so that money is going for this….

i am also hoping that Tell It Like It Is sales will help as well….

again, that is what i have always done..make money on one thing and reinvest one way or another immediately….Tell It is gonna be super sized 60×40 silver gelatin prints….i am getting a very good deal on those from the printmaker in trade for his brand listed somehow…easy enough….

hope you are well John….hope to see you this summer..London is in the mix…

    cheers david
