South Beach, Miami. So I’m sitting alone on a park bench yesterday and a young attractive woman comes alone and sits right beside me and starts to read a book. Yes a paper book! I was busy shooting a volleyball game from my bench seat and didn’t pay much attention to the woman at first. Then I saw the book she was reading. A childbirth manual. Then I saw she was pregnant. So I broke the silence and commented that I never see people reading paper books and asked when her baby was due. New baby boy in 4 weeks. Dad was playing volleyball and her daughter Lis,6,showed up and we all became friends especially since Rayla is a Brazilian pro model living in South Beach. So one thing leads to another and now I’ve invited pregnant mom and daughter to my hotel terrace for a snack and find myself signing a copy of ( based on a true story) which is set in Rio over to my new friend Rayla. The rose seller (they are everywhere) walks by and I bite. Of course I’m shooting this entire time. Point is, and I stress this to my students, that one seemingly insignificant moment can lead to anything if you keep the door open to THE KEY.. serendipity.. Sit long enough and the world of pictures will come to you. Photographers often tend to search when in fact they simply need to observe. Thanks so much Rayla and Lis. I have so many pictures to send you. Making new friends random like this is one of the most beautiful rewards of this type of work. Treasure.
