This photograph of migrating tree swallows appeared as a double page spread in NatGeo for a story I wrote and photographed on the Outer Banks where I live. Now I’ve traveled around the world for NG, ad clients, and a variety of commissions. Normally every picture has a bust ass to get the shot story behind it. Freezing on the arctic ice, scared shitless in Pol Pots killing fields, or bored out of my skull riding a in freight train cab across Canada. Good magazine work requires fortitude, patience beyond patience, and a long distance runner mentality. Yet for this shot I only put my coffee cup down, picked up my camera off my kitchen table and walked all the way down (50 feet) to the end of my driveway. It was all right there. For less than five minutes. I was able to walk right in and I shot this with my usual 35mm lens. Went back in and finished my coffee. Lesson to be learned? Don’t count on luck, but if it happens dig it🎈
